Default Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires

Hi,

I have a 1997 Cab that needs tires. Any experience with the Bridgestone RE050A's? What other tires would you recommend?

Also, what would be the largest tire size I could go with my 17" cup wheels?

Thanks.

RE050 is a good tire but I thnink it has a tredwear of 140

225/50 in front, 255/40 in back. The stock 205's in the front don't cut it.

EDIT- Correct size on front is 225/45 as noted by others below.

I just bought a set of 050A's for my 964. They do seem pretty sticky. For cryin' out loud, they are 140 treadwear so they'd better be sticky. Tire Rack had a great deal on them, so I figured I'd give 'em a try. I guess you could say I like them FWIW, though I've only driven about 50 miles on them. The mold release is barely worn off.

By the way, isn't it 225/45 in front??

Yes, it's 225/45. Otherwise your front tire is too tall.

I run these on my S2000 and have no complaints as a daily fair weather tire.

Much depends on your driving but I just got a set of BFG's (in signature below) and my first impression is that they are far and away a much better tire than the S02's they replaced.
Cheers,

Tirerack's reviews rate it very highly, but the number of miles is still low since it's a new tire. This is pretty common on Tirerack, where the early adopters of a new tire rave about their cutting edge purchase. Will be interesting to see if the ratings hold up when there are more reviews from people who have run the tiires for an entire lifecycle.

One thing that stands out to me: like the S-03s before them, the RE050A is an incredibly heavy tire. The RE01-R is the same. Bridgestone can't seem to get a sporty feel without massive construction. Note that the turn-in is similar to the 10-15% lighter weight Michelin PS2. For all their performance kudos, the S-03s were a clunky, heavy, thumpy tire over rough roads. I wonder if the RE050A is the same?

Eric -

Be sure to plan ahead in your size selection to account for lowering the car.

I agree with Jon. I have a new set of the RE050A's, so far very good and great in the wet. I wanted Michelin PS02s but was advised by my mechanic not to change the size of the tire as he likes how the car is currently set. I trusted him and with Bridgestone as they make 285s (did not like the Michelin Ribs). Let you know as they progress.

I just put a set on my car 225/45 front and 255/40 rear.

So far so good. Got about 120 miles on them.

TireRack had a great deal on them and American Tire matched the price.

I'm probably on my 10th set of rear tires, 5th set of fronts. I believe that the car came with Dunlop sport 9000's. They were O'K. Switched to SO2's. The were supposed to have better wet traction. I experienced snap oversteer on a wet road and crashed. Went to Michelin Pilot Sport Rib, and they have been the best tire yet. I had the Brigdestone RE040's on my 350 Z convertable, and wasn't at all happy. Their performance in cool/cold weather was crappy and in cold/wet weather, treacherous.

Default How about Goodyear F-1 GS-D3s?

Just to inject another tire into the mix. I have these on the BMW and have been really happy with them, treadwear, noise, very predictable and stable feel (though running wider tires than the 993 all around). Anyone have these on their 993? (I know rennlister akolodesh, whose sway bars are happily on my car, did). They are a close third in the Tirerack "max summer" ratings with 16 million reported miles, so people have had plenty of time to change their minds.

I have S-02A's on now and am pretty ambivalent about them. Lots of noise at this point and am just not blown away by them.

I put on the Bridgestone RE050A Pole Positions in November.. Before I went through several sets of Pirelli P-zero Rossos.. So far, I've run 2 short track events (SOW) and one 2-day Time Trial (WSIR)with the Bridgestones.. Grip is similar to the Pirellis and they seem to be wearing at least as well as the Pirellis, maybe better.. For a mixed street/track tire, I like them personally. They seem to be a decent compromise between performance and longevity.. I normally would be due for a new set of rears this fall.. Thats when I'll have a better handle on longevity vs the Pirelli.
