1st AutoX today - Yippee!
Did about as well as I expected, but of course, not nearly as good as I'd hoped. Got 3rd place in my group. (I think I'll wear my medal as my new G-chain - yo). Yeah right!
Spun out once. (hung head in shame).
Impressions are: 1. Need more practice. 2. Have Mirage tweak my suspension. 3. Need more practice. 4. How the hell am I going to find all those extra seconds that the fast drivers had on me?!! 5. Yep, going to need more practice.
Can't wait to do it again.
As far as how to drop second off of your time, I think you hit the nail on the head when you say practice. It takes a while to see the right path through the cones. Also, some of the drivers may have been running Hoosiers, Kuhmos or some other racing tire, which will give you a big advantage once you get used to your car.
Have fun!
you shave off seconds with learning how to drive.
you shave off seconds with smart mods.
for my personal experience for a 993, the mods that really make a difference.
1. R-Compound Tires
2. sway bars
3. Light weight flywheel
4. reduce weight out of the car (as much as possible)
5. lowering the car
i have a car that comes in the top 5-8 out of a field of 100 cars. so that's what has worked for me. And here in the bay area there is a pretty competitive autox field.
Cheers,
Boris
I highly recommend you attend the PCA April Driving School with us and learn exactly how best to drive these cars and what they can truly do.
Hope to see you at the next Auto-X too..........................ZP44

However if you do decide to change your suspension, you have some great shops in San Diego. Living in Paso Robles, I have Guy's in SLO, one of the best shops I have ever done business with, bar none, period.
Between POC and PCA, you will have some great opportunities to learn to drive your car to your potential. Don't worry about the car's potential...that will come later.
Yes ZP44, I'm planning on the driver's school for sure - I need it. Also, good to meet you yesterday. Didn't realize until today when you posted your pics that I was standing next to David Ray when you were talking to him. I'll endeavor to meet more RL'ers next time.
40Anny don't delay, just do it. It is a blast! Not much chance you'll be grinding gears as you pretty much stay in 2nd gear the whole track. There may be one spot for 3rd depending on your car, but I didn't seem to need to in my car. Although I couldn't focus on my speedo (too busy looking at the tach when I actually got a moment to look), I think the fastest section of the track was only somewhere around 70 mph, if that. And since you'll likely stay in 2nd for the course, not much chance of stalling either. And even if you did, who cares? :-)
If someone would've told me this stuff before I went, I probably would've thought it wasn't going to be too thrilling. Let me tell you. It's VERY thrilling. In some corners, simply forcing yourself not to lift off the gas when all your instincts are yelling at you to do so is very exciting.
And Craig, there were lots of cars there so it was tough to soak them all in my 1st time, but did you run? I didn't see your name in the results.
