Default OT: Can't we upgrade "search" limits?

As the content becomes more robust on this site, and more members pony up, can't we expand to real-time search capabilities?

To limit searches to "one per minute" in 2007 seems pretty retro.

While waiting to get to the next term or topic, I click, click, click and refresh until the clock runs out. That's gotta be more a waste of bandwidth than more search volume.

Just wondering....

I'd rather not bother John about it, but the search delay irritates me as well.

Other "free" auto forums I peruse have a 20 second delay, waiting for the delay is irksome...

I agree, it irritates me as well. Maybe the delay could be shortened to 15 seconds? Or taken off for paying members?

If we couldn't get unlimited, 15-20 second intervals would be greatly appreciated.

Agreed, that 1-minute wait is very frustrating. I find that it really reduces the amount of searching I do. I think it used to be like ~20 sec, which wasn't so bad, but got bumped up to 1 min, which is often rather a pain.

And I'd hate to think that noobs aren't using Search because it's so difficult to use.

The other irritating thing about the search function are members constantly telling others to use it. Would it be possible to add the term to the banned keyword list?

I've got to agree with you there JasonAndreas, it would be nice if people would either provide assistance or refrain from commenting. I hate it when I'm using the search function to research a topic, and I am forced to wade through postings where my relevant question is asked, and the only response given was to "do a search". Given that everything that we say here is archived, it makes more sense to either "put up or shut up".

Searches are really burdensome to servers. I can understand why they have to do some throttling. John D. doesn't have Google's deep pockets for hardware after all.

Use the Search; your suggestion has been discussed before.

Probably a dumb question, but what is the check box with "Also search in child forums"?

A child forum structure helps to keep messages focused and properly categorized. The hierarchy of the search subject is displayed at the parent level for easy drill down. Members and even users who want to ignore off-topic discussions (as is often the case) can drill down to the relevant "child"; and the users who don't mind reading all the messages can still do it at the parent forum level. In short, it's supposed to ease the pain of the search functionality. Hope that helps.
FWIW, I also find the search a bit discouraging.

I think there's a way to use Google to search only a specific site but I don't know how well-archived the posts are on there. I know some of them have come up when I've searched Google before. That's a potential workaround.

The growing pains are absolutely understandable, as are the "costs of doing business"...as Rennlist's traffic has ramped dramatically, so has it's paying member base.

A 15 second interval works well to limit/inhibit the spider/robot ecosystem, and is widely adopted in the discussion forum community.

Given we're a community where many work hard to shave 1 second off lap times by removing floor mats and radios, it's ironic that:
if you lose one minute to reload one search every day, you've lost 12 hours during a two year membership!
