I am going have the compressor replaced by mechanic as soon as i can sched an appointment. My question is can i still drive the car as long as a/c is turned off? I already removed the clutch (came right off). Should I also remove the a/c belt and drive it that way? -Thx Joe

As long as the belt is removed, driving your car will be fine.

Default Advice please exactly the same issue!

Hi, judging by the original post date I'm nearly two decades late to the party!. However if anyone is still out there, I have exactly the same issue on a 95 993 c4s. Seems to run fine with air-con off but all manner of smoke and whining emanates from the back when I have fan and air con on (even without my in-laws in the car).

Just wondering if you found a resolution, was it a new compressor or bearings or both?

Cheers

Have you tried checking the engine compartment when the AC is on to determine source? Sounds like a stuck or damaged compressor? Belt problem?

Thx, I've since had a better look now it's cooled down and suspect it is the compressor. It only occurs with both air con and fan are switched on and I can see it trying to turn, so it appears the clutch and bearings are functioning and can't turn the compressor. Which is a shame as Porsche seem to charging over two grand for compressors, so I might get a non Porsche branded one. I've booked it into the garage for a virdict and will post the outcome. Symptoms are precisely the same as this post.
