Exclamation Decoding a CARFAX report ? ? ?

Hi Guys,

Ya all know I'm still seeking out my future life companion for daily drives.

One looks good, but there is something strange about its CARFAX report; can you help me decode it ?

10/23/1998 21,860
Dealer Inventory Huntington Station, NY Vehicle offered for sale

10/28/1998 21,883 Service Facility
Vehicle serviced Suspension system serviced

04/01/1999 21,971
Auto Auction Eastern Region Vehicle sold

11/16/2006 40,943
Auto Auction Sold at auction in Pennsylvania
Listed as a dealer vehicle

12/06/2006 41,108
Auto Auction Sold at auction in Florida
Listed as a dealer vehicle

What has got me wondering is:

- Would a dealer service a C2 993's suspension at 21k miles ?!?

- What do repeat auction sales mean (hidden accident history?)

TIA for helping me DECODE.

Vic,

This is how I decoded.

A dealer in NY had a 993 for sale, and probably during a test drive the potential customer complaint that something is wrong with the suspension, so the dealer had it repaired. It is common to have 993 standard (Monroe) shocks fail at 20k miles. My shocks failed at 5k miles.

But this is the part that I am not sure about.

04/01/1999 21,971
Auto Auction Eastern Region Vehicle sold

11/16/2006 40,943
Auto Auction Sold at auction in Pennsylvania
Listed as a dealer vehicle

Who purchased the car on 4/1? Another dealer? Becasue it is showing it was sold on 11/16 as a dealer vehicle. So another dealer bought it and put 20k miles on the car? I guess it is possible that another dealer exchange another car for this 993, dealerships to that all the time. And the car was used as a dealer car (For managers or sales person of the month?) And then sold at auctions again....

Here is my conclusion, that this most likely was a customer buy back vehicle (A lemon) So the dealer probably couldn't sell this car to another end user, so they used it as a dealer vehicle but after so many auctions and change of hands somewhere the limitation was lost.....

It looks like a clean car, but I'm going to have to travel far to see in person, and don't want to throw away all the time and money for nothing.

Does this look like a car with a hidden accident history?

Also, a couple of photos seem to show some paint touch up along the leading edge plus of the driver and passenger doors:

Crownvic,
That's one hell of a colorful past. But until you get a proper PPI and touch the car yourself, Carfax ramblings do little to tell the full story. I would try to get better photos and even request photos of specific areas around the car before committing to a trip. It could be a great example, but you really need to go over it in person.

An easy way to tell if a 993 have been wrecked especially from the front. Have them send you pictures of the front of the shock tower where it meets the inside of the fender. Just peel back the carpet and take a picture on either side, post the pictures here. The factory sealant used to join the shock tower and the fender can not be reproduced, so usually if there is a repair you will see a different shaped sealant.
