Jon are u using Blackstone to track ur car engine's internal wear? if so how do u like them, I know some aircraft engines are tracked for internal signs of wear.

Anyone else using a simular company to Blackstone and how are ur results and costs?

I've used Blackstone for a few years now on other cars. I had them test the mystery oil my 993 came with to get a baseline and make sure there were no wear metals. I intend to have them test going forward.

Steve -

Having read the article you have send around (which is great) what are we going with on the oil front. I think I speak for alot of people on this board when I say that the car sees summer street use, spirited driving and 5 to 10 track weekends a season. I have been a devoted user of Mobil1 15W-50, and their 90W gear oil, what are you recommending now, having this info. Do you agree with the 20W-50 motorcycle oil?

PO religiously used Mobil 1 15W50 since 1996.
No drips or leaks EVER and she uses a quart approx. 2 to 2.5 thousand miles.

I only use Mobil 1 15W50 (SL) during my oil changes and also slip in a quart of Lucas.
No drips or leaks, quiet running engine, still uses a quart every 2.5K miles or so.
No complaints.
(And yes, I drive it year-round ...OK, OK, I try to avoid the salt-snow days).

Yeah, don't worry, I've seen/read all the pros and cons about Lucas and 'frothing' etc. etc.
Based on what I read/saw I *still* made the decision to use a quart in the p-car.

Have used Lucas in the wife's Ford for the last 8+ years (and 80K miles) with no probems and in the p-car, now, for approx. 2 years, with nary a hiccup wrt oil pressure, consumption, weird sounds, etc. etc. etc.

As always, YMMV, mine seems to be OK!

My only point in offering that link is to say that oil formulations have (are) changed due to the new API SM rating and the EPA-mandated rules on cat life. This resulted in drastically reduced levels of ZDDP which is NOT a good thing.

The bottom line is that if the bottle has "API SM/SL" on it, its NOT the same good stuff as you've been using.

Last night after work, I perused the isles at my local Walmart looking at various oils to see what was currently available. All of the Mobil 1 formulations were now the new SM, the Royal Purple was still SL (this may change), Rotella & Delo were still SL or CJ but that will change soon as diesel oils reduce the Zn, P and S content.

Look carefully at the bottles as that tells the tale.

There is a LOT of activity on this subject over on Pelican's 911 Forum in a few threads and its really highly recommended reading!! You'll note a few comments on Lucas products, too.

Mr. Hillary's postings were very enlightening & educational but one needs to remember that the oil formulations sold overseas are NOT the same things as we have here, especially now.

Our 993's run Mobil 1 0W-40. Most importantly, whatever oil/visc. you are running, don't stomp on it until you are within safe operating temperature range.
