I had this about a year ago. It turned out to be the little metal clip that holds the gear stick on. It is a nightmare to fit and I think the last owner replaced the leather cover and bent the clip a little too much. I took it off and bent it back so that it was a tight fit. It took a while to clip back on, but once it was on the rattle disappeared.

Could be a couple of things.

1) There may be slack on the inside of the gearshift shaft. In this case, insert a strip of old inner tube over the shaft, then place the **** over while holding the rubber. Should be snug fit, this will reduce the metal to metal contact.

2) The top of the **** may be separating from the bottom. In this case, try wrapping some dental floss around the gap and stuff it in there so you don't see it hanging loose. I know this sounds ridiculous, but believe or not it worked for me. I got his idea from someone else I can't remember now. I have the aluminum shifter **** so this solution only works if you have it.

nels thanx, how does the shift **** come off?

I think it may be in the shaft were it attaches to the shift rod? bushings maybe, like my old VW.

any other thought's are very welcome.

Thanx again

The **** comes off by giving a nice pull straight up. It is simply pressure fitted.

Beware: Watch your rear view mirror and esp. face when doing this maneuver!

Good luck!

The rectangular frame at the base of the shifter boot must first be released fron the consul: press down on the left side to push the frame from two spring clips .... and this will allow it to separate from two securing hooks on the right side - then pull upwards ...

Ah yes....completely forgot about that "minor" step.

Thanks for the correction!

When experiencing the rattle, pinch the leather boot about halfway down at the point where the **** meets the metal shaft ( this is not sounding quite right ) .... if the noise stops, you have likely pinpointed the cause.

The **** does not come off. It is not the original, but an aluminum **** that is integrated with the boot.
The long plastic casing does not come off either. How do I access the inside?
Thanks.

a pic of the **** would help.
and of the underside of the boot where the **** meets the lever...

edit: do you have the base of the boot loose from the console yet?
If not, that is where you start.
We have a DIY doc linked just above the PET diagram on this page that may help: http://www.fdmotorsports.net/index_files/Page2027.htm
