Default Self Dimming Rear View Mirror

Hi,

I am considering installing a self dimming interior rearviw mirror from
Gert Carnewal in my '97 993 Cabriolet.

If anyone else has done this, I would love to know the difficulty level.

When installed, does the new mirror use the old bracket glued to the windshield? Also, where and how are the electrical wires routed? How are the cosmetics when finished?

Any pics would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Miker

I've had just the opposite experience - they're a nice feature. Gert's kit will provide complete instructions, you can probably use the existing bracket already glued to the windshield. The mirror can be removed by grabbing the arm and twisting counterclockwise. It's quite snug, but apply strong, even pressure. Typically the wires are routed inside the windshield rubber, down the A-pillar and into the dash for hookup. The rubber is a press fit and should pull right off.

I think they are great. My truck and the TT have one. Sure wish the 964 did. How much are they? If he doesnt like it just push the button to turn it off

Another vote for it. They work great, what's not to like?

I had them on the 997S and thought they worked very well. Exterior mirrors dimmed, too.

Mark,

Do both exterior mirrors dim? for some reason I think that 1 does not.

They work great, except when you need to reverse and it's still darkened.

Jay,

Yes, from what I recall, both outside mirrors do dim.

I had them on my 997s as well but had quite a problem.
At night, the dimming worked very well, but the problem was in great sunshine weather.
As soon as you enter a tunnel, the mirrors dimmed right there and then, and I could see nothing. I could not even see the headlights of cars following me and barely see if someone was behind me or not.
When the tunnel was long, the eyes adapted.
But going out of the city with numerous consequent tunnels, wasn't pleasant.

FWIW, I have them on my Audi. All three mirrors are self-dimming and I love it!

I have one on my G35 and it's a mandatory piece of equipment for me on any car going forward.

I have them on my Audi S4 and had them on a previous BMW. I would strongly recommend them to anyone who has to drive around SUV's with Xenon lights. They really cut the harsh edge of the brightness. Not as effective as "flipping" your rearview into "night mode", but work well enough to prevent the sudden shift out of dark accommodation.

I find that when someone behind me has exceptionally bright or mis-aligned headlights, I reach up anf flip my mirror. When they go away, I flip it back. But I'm an old geezer, and don't much care for automatic doo-dads.
