Question Another oil question

First, I've done the search thing on what wt Mobile 1 to use. Looks like 0w-40 or 5w-40.

Here in Montana I'd like to use the 5w-40. Here's the issue, the only 5w-40 Mobile makes is their turbo diesel truck oil.

Anyone use this or see any issues with using this oil? Here's the link:

I considered 0w-40 but some of you spoke of excessive lifter noise and low oil pressure. I feel the 5w-40 would be just right.

Update...I called Mobile. The tech stated to use 15w-50....can you say out of touch? He did state that the turbo diesel truck 5w-40 would work fine, no problems, "since it was an older vehicle"

Searching??

The M1 TSUV (same as Delvac 1) is a great oil and will be fine for your car. BTW, the 15w50 M1 is rumored to have changed the basestock from PAO to a Group 111...what this means? Cheaper for Exxon Mobil to make, not really enough feedback yet to see if it protects as well or better than the old basestock...Regardless, it is not the best oil for your app as your car has hydraulic lifters and needs a 5 or 0w 40....

Shell makes a great 5W40 full synthetic. This is what is in my car. Also used in all Ferraris.

Good luck

I'm using the Delvac Mobil1 fully synthetic heavy diesel truck etc etc. PAO plus Ester basestocks. Basically it's got all the right stuff but not quite as good as Motul so if you can afford $12+ per liter Motul 300V 5W40 is still the ne plus ultra.

Here's a VOA. I'll change it in a year and see how it held up.

I'd use exactly what is specified in my owner's manual which I think is 0 W 40 synthetic but maybe it is 5 W 40 for extremely hot conditions which I wouldn't think included Montana, I'd have to look at my manual to be sure. There's an interesting article in the current issue of Excellence on oils for 911s, either by Bruce Anderson or Jim Pasha, I forget which (I'm forgetting a lot of stuff lately The article points out that oils for 993 Porsches are not strictly lubricants but they must also act as hydraulic fluid (for the lifters) and as coolants.

p. 99 of the owners manual for my '98 S states "...viscosity grades of 10W- 40 or higher....for continuous weather conditions ... below 32F use 5W-30 engine oils." But what does the manufacturer know for on page 4 of the maintenance book it requires oil to be changed every 15K miles and the filters every 30K miles. Who should I believe the manufacturer or some guy that discovered some 0-40 great oil that he loves?

The mechanics at Weissach up here are using Mobile 1 5w-50 as a replacement to 15w-50 from what everyone here in Vancouver that i have talked to says it's been discontinued.. i assume they just cant get it in Canada anymore.

There are a number of "Porsche approved" oils on the latest TSB...These oils will supersede all previous recommendations...There are only 2 (as far as I could tell) that were "50" weights...All othere were either 0 or 5w40's....Motul is great, but very expensive...Redline is similiar in composition (ester base) and about 8 bucks/qt. Castrol Syntec 5w40 is a decent oil, there are better. It is a group 111 with a so-so additive package. We're splitting hairs here of course...I'lll see if I can find the latest TSB for oils....

Looks like 5w-50 is for the whole world outside of USA -- the US Mobil 1 site shows 15w-50, but no 5w-50. I guess that's why the latest "approved" list from Porsche has 5w-50 on it but not 15w-50, which should be the equivalent for those of us who never see temps below 0C.

Nice. I wish they'd update their approved tire list that often.
