Question Brake air deflector???

Recently, 911/Q45 pointed out to me that Rufus has the nice air deflector gizmos in the front fenders. Even though I don't track the car, I'd like to make that deflector useful, considering limited budget, and total lack of any skill. So, my question is, what good is that gizmo as it stands today (Rufus has the large "S" type ducts... no lights) in the front bumper. There are no hoses going anywhere.

What sort of air flow do I have right now? Is there any air going to the brakes? What would it take for a dufus to make any improvements? Feel free to comment about the filth in the fender... someday, I swear, I'll clean that mess up.

Looks like you've got 1/2 of the brake cooling duct setup. p-car.com has a brake duct installation DIY. It runs the cooling hose straight to the caliper, but you could run it to the "gizmo" & it would direct air the the brake. I think that is how the fog/duct setup from Gert works. Also note that you've also got the stock cooling fin that directs air from under the car.

Steve, since you don't track maybe you should just sell the stuff to me and forget about it.

Thanks all.

Eric, How tough is it to run the hose to the gizmo from the duct? Will it do an effective cooling job like that? What is the function of the "stock cooling fin" that you mention? Does that help or hurt the cooling? Doest it matter once you run the hose?

Jeff, I hate you. Did you have to respray the undercoat to make it nice and shiney. Did I mention that I hate you? Cause I do.

Brad, Sorry, but I'm into the "bling". I'd like to hear your thoughts on a high HP TT with 2wd. Did you ever have that engine with AWD so you could compare?

Better people than you have told me that.

No respraying necessary. It's shiny in the pictures because it is wet. But I dressed it with Aerospace 303 Protectant.

Steve, there's some modification required to get the hose past the A/C & oil coolers and through the fender liner. Basically, you need to fashion a hole to fit the hose through. Without the hose, the air is blowing in to your oil & A/C coolers - not a bad thing, but not cooling the brakes.

Based on it's design, I'd say the stock cooling fin scoops up air from below the car and directs it at the lower portion of the rotor and maybe part of the caliper. So, I'm sure it helps cool the brakes, but not nearly as effectively as a directed blast out of a cooling duct.

Steve,
Lol, I hate to tell you but your plastic deflector seems to be useless. It's a techart part that's used with their fog light / brake duct setup. There, the brake duct has a short hose that terminates at the fender liner (wheel well). When the air comes out of the hose, it hits this air deflector and gets directed to the brakes. If you have no hose or hole in the fender liner, then there's no reason to have an air deflector there because there's no air to deflect!

If you don't track the car, I wouldn't worry about it one way or another. But if you want to try, then hook up a hose to your duct and terminate it at the fender liner like techart does. Just my $0.02.

WRT the first mod:
http://www.dietersmotorsports.com/tech/2002/4-2002.htm

BTDT...waste of money for street use, even if it is cheap. Mine ripped off on the first bump in the road. Lasted all of 15 minutes.

More than likely you have the TechArt kit that has the hose running through the fender liner and using the air deflector to generally deflect the air towards the rotor. Just leave it alone. You don't need additional brake cooling for the street anyway.

I know I don't "need" any more braking power. But If I'm "almost" there, I want to see how hard it would be to go the rest of the way. So, here's the deal... when I purchased Rufus, he had the factory turbo "S" ducts (with the flat, round lights). He went straight to the body shop where the Ruf CTR bumper was fitted, and the S ducts replaced with the ones I prefer... larger without lights. If there was any hoses back there, it was never mentioned to me. There are no hoses now. I don't know if the fender liner has a hole in it or not... if it does, then it sounds pretty simple to run a hose from the duct to the liner, and let the deflector gizmo take it from there. If there is no hole, then I'll start to like the idea of better air flow to the coolers and AC condensor.

Thanks all for your help. Perhaps my time is better spent cleaning up those wheel wells, and then scratching Jeff's name off my voodoo list.

I second that thought.

Steve,

These are the TA ducts and hoses.. I want these so bad!!

So if you have the plastic defector then this set is missing them.
