Pete,

I was the bid is $30k? That's pretty low for a 98, relatively low miles and all.

Well, now ... do a little more homework on Schmitt before you'd go recommending them to anyone, particularly "by mail."

I think the 10-foot-pole comment is equally in play with those guys, and yes, I had one of their "pristine low-mileage" cars checked out a couple years back.

What color was your previous 993 and what shop bought it? Was the owner's name Dan?

I agree with Pete - the car looks waaay too suspect...It totally seems pieced together...the steering wheel looks at least 10 years old and used quite hard (note the cracks in the wheel). Another thing, why would someone put photos of their children in an ad? I'd never want the general public to know what kind of car I drive and photos of my children. Very strange car...I'd stay away and let some other unsuspecting buyer deal with it. Hopefully I am wrong and the car is a smokin' deal....but then again, you get what you pay for and i'd hate to see a Rennlist Member get taken on a Porsche.

Another thing I just noticed from checking out that Ad that Scott posted from Autotrader....Carfax has a BUYBACK Guarantee....if he really bought that car, and had that carfax which he claims was clean when he bought it...couldnt he just have Carfax enlist their buyback guarantee??

Jason, it was a black on tan Carrera 2 coupe, 6-speed ... I don't remember the bodyshop guy's name, he never got back in touch with me after that one call. He was somewhere in the Worcester area, though.

The other thing that was kind of unsettling about that incident is that a certain well-known outfit that sells parts from wrecked Porsches was very interested in buying the salvage from me, but only if I bought it from the insurance company myself and it came to them on a clean non-salvage title. I said no thanks ...

Thanks for continuing to check. The salvage car is out as far as I'm concerned. The bid is 30K and that's ridiculous. I looked at the green on green one and Cindy says NO...to much green.

The dark green/gray has possibilities and I thank you for pointing that one out. Will follow up on that.

Cindy is looking at a home on Lake Sunapee in NH for us and we're in FL until May, and we have 2 homes on the Cape to sell, so the 993 has moved from 1st to 4th priority according to my wife. If we move to NH, we'll be in "Dunkleland"

And she also wants to go to the PCA parade in San Diego with MISTY in July with some friends, so I may be broke if all this stuff doesn't come together in the proper order.

I thought when you turned 70 one could relax, but I guess we're not quite ready to do that.
Will keep looking tho. You never know
Thanks again
Don

He says somewhere in the ad that if it doesn't sell on eBay he'll just wait until he gets $50K for it! Your're quite right that $30K is low for a '98 with low miles but $30K is his opening bid level and when I saw the ad a few days ago, there weren't any bids. Like the other guys, I don't know the effect of a salvage title on price but I'd think the 25% that someone mentioned isn't out of line, but it could be even more than that.

Interesting. I wasn't "recommending" them to anyone, just mentioning to check them out. As I said, I've only been to their lot, not bought anything from them. They have been in business in StL for many years so I wouldn't think they could be tooooo crooked. All in all, I'm suspicious of any of these dealers that buy their cars at auction.

No offense intended, Pete ... this is a dealership whose name has surfaced numerous times on this forum, usually in a not-so-good way. Word to the wise ...
