I just picked up a 320gig for the 35,000 MP3 songs Im getting from a buddy. I will soon have the Billboard top 100 from 1952-2002, plus a bunch of other misc. songs.

I went with Seagate-5 year standard warranty. Im not an extended warranty person but cant beat the warranty. If it works for the 1st year, smooth sailing probably for the life of it.

Have you guys had good luck with these drives? I really wanted one, but read somewhere they were experiencing problems from heat..? IIRC

I've had a 160gb version for about 1 1/2 years. No problems so far. Because it looks good, it sits on my desk- so I have easy access to switch it on/off when needed. ( mostly old files from past computers)
Last week i added the 500gb version to back-up files on my current Mac.

Mine has a fan on/off option on it and does get a little warm but nothing alarming. I spent nearly 8 years in the PC industy (got out of that industry in 1999) and never personally had an issue with heat in any products-internal/external devices. But yes, some products get hot.

It's true for the air-cooled Porsche HDs. There's a tray underneath the disk that was added in order to meet Swiss indoor disk drive noise regulations. It appears to raise disk temps in operation. Some people argue that it's required to maintain stability at the high (7200rpm) disk speeds but others remove it with no ill effect, even at high data transfer rates. Removing the tray also allows you to spot data leaking from the disk before you lose it all catastrophically.

Only problem I had with mine is the ridiculous power cord, which has four little fragile prongs that must be lined up perfectly when it's plugged in; of course, one bent and then snapped off when I gingerly tried to straighten it with a jeweler's screwdriver.

However, I called LaCie and they shipped me a new adapter, no charge, which was classy, particularly since I've had the drive well over a year.
