I was originally going with the 993RS wheel, but I wanted a sportier, more old school look. I ended up with a Momo Mod.07 LE (leather, not suede). They are on eBay for under $200 brand new in the box, including the Porsche crest horn button. You'll need a Momo 7004 hub adapter, which is about $70.

I like that look too. But for a street car, I want an airbag.

I would stick with an airbag wheel in my car. Now that you guys are wearing seat belts so don't need the huge airbags that you used to have (they used to be much bigger in US cars as they had to account for idiots not wearing seatbelts) the newer wheels should not blow your arms off or whatever ridiculous claims are being made. :-)

Isn't there a 996 sport rim with a thicker grip?

Cheers,

David

If you actually look at the research on this, most upper extremity & facial airbag related injuries occur in short people/women who sit very close to the steering wheel. Otherwise, it is simply the unlucky person - or smokers - who happen to have their hand in front of their face at the time of impact. I'll vote for an airbag for public road use.

Yes, it's called the 'CPZ' wheel.

Is the "CPZ" on the wheel anywhere?

Mike,
No, it doesn't say CPZ (who knows what that stands for anyway?). It was a factory option on 996/Gt3s. Check on Gert's site under 3-spoke wheel 'thicker rim'.

What about the Cup steering wheel? It's very cool. Gert has it on his site - click "interior" then "P93". Just below the RS steering wheel link.

BTW the ebay RS wheel price is $75 more than Gert's price for the same wheel before shipping.

Airbags are only helpful if you're going to make contact with the steering wheel. I don't
think that will happen if you're belted in correctly. On the other hand what about safety
inspections - I think here in TX your car requires an airbag if it was original equipment.
Maybe I could convince the tech there's a tiny one in there eh ???

Cool Isn’t there a problem with using a helmet in an airbag equipped car? Martin?

Bobby,

There could be...I am not aware of it. Were that the case I am certain the Safety ***** of the clubs I compete with would have us disconnect those pesky air bags.

I drive with a closed face helmet, 5 point belts and a HANS device. Note in the case of a severe frontal impact, the belts stretch, some say up to 30%....scary thought. That is why that are replaced after an impact. I would like to assume that the the belts stretch no more than a stock belt...probably less, and that the air bag will function to slow the deceleration.

I also wear a driving suit, for those that are interested...no nudy cuties allowed on the track!

I have a street car that I drive on the track 6 times a year, more if the budget allows...I am not about to disconnect my air bag...I am convinced they work...and that air bags are not some conspiracy foisted off on us by the liberals. I can't really argue the point any better than this....you have my best shot!

I'm 99.999999% sure seat belts don't stretch anywhere near 30% before they fail. But I've
never tested one. My 4 point "click-in" belts for my E36 M3 have a small part in each inboard
shoulder harness that is sewn over itself with a number of threads. The threads are intended
to come apart in a crash and that will lengthen that shoulder harness by 2x the sewn-over
amount. The intent is to rotate your torso in a crash - apparently it lowers the forces on your
innards and back during the crash by having your shoulders not take the impact square on.

Kinda like this:

Cool Do a little more research...I have read the 30% figure, I...

just don't have time to look it up again. Let's hope it is not 30%...I agree. I applaud your interest in the safety aspects of performance driving.
