brakes
Good evening Rennlister
I have a '95 993 with 105000 miles.
I am going to paint my brake calipers and replace the cracked brake lines.
My question is "Do I need to do a brake caliper rebuild while I'm in there?"
The brakes wear evenly and there are no cracks in the dust shield (boot).
I do two driver's ed. a year.
Thanks

Hi Kevin,
I didn't rebuild my calipers, however I have 1/2 the milage you do. I would guess that unless you have a frozen caliper, a rebuild wouldn't be necessary. Are you disassembling the calipers to paint? Are you using a brush-on kit? I am planning on helping rkb with the same project over the winter - maybe we can make it a party!!
Happy New Year to you and yours!!

With a dental pick the seals and boots are trivial to replace but they are expensive at $50USD per caliper. And just as important but way more of a PITA are the spring plates at $26USD per caliper. It is easier to paint with them removed but if you can install new brake pads without having to file down the edges to get them to fit you should be okay with your original spring plates.

Thank you for your replys.
John, I an going to use the G-2 paint from tire-rack.
Your brakes have inspired me.
I don't know when I am going to do this.
Just trying to get everything together.
I'll let you know
Jason, thank you for your advice.
I will replace the seals whenever I do the brakes.

FWIW - I didn't disassemble mine (didn't even remove the rears) to paint. Just clean clean clean clean clean clean. When you're done with the cleaning, clean some more. The better your cleaning job, the better the end result.
