one thing that I found helped, that i didn read anywhere, was to take the top of the strut off 1st. It makes it easy to manoever the strut. Look down, if u see the little gold pin sticking out of the strut at the ball joint, pull it out. If there is no PIN, u can simply pop it out with your hands......its pretty easy (in retrospect)

Tie a piece of dental floss to the pin retaining clip before you try to remove it, and if you drop it, it doesn't wind up in a black hole.

I had the pins on the bottom of my struts, but was still able to simply pop the bottom off the post--but, like you said, I removed the tops of the struts from the hood first.

Based on the DIY at p-car.com, I was ready for some big episode, but ended up only taking about 10 minutes to do both sides.

It seems Porsche still hasn't offered gas struts that last that long. The ones for earlier 911s are notorioius for their short life span.

Another option to consider. It doesn't wear out.

if you have a 911 and don't have one of these, you need a few types.

No affliiation, just what came up with a quick google search.

A couple of these came in very handy recently. Anytime you remove any nut or screw under the engine lid if it drops and you don't have a safety net (aka towel/rag) it is sure to drop into some abyss or another.

That's funny because when I replaced mine I ordered the two shocks, two extra clips, and a magnetic pickup tool. The magnetic pickup tool is still in its packaging and one of the extra clips is on its way to Montreal. I was planning for the worst.

Maybe a bit late for some of you guys and gals but there is an RS piece that is just a stick
that you put into place in a receiver cup and it holds up the front lid. I think this one lasts
forever and it will save a tiny bit of weight. You can order from Carnewal, it's 22 euros.
Kind of expensice for a stick but it's supposed to be a genyoooooine part.

I just did the front hood (bonnet) shocks. Took about a 1/2 an hour. No lost clips, just a cut finger. Hardest part was getting the small screwdriver in the retaining clip below. Passengar side was harder then driver side.
Wife did help, but just to move hood up or down to realign pin for the upper part of shock.
I only had the sleeve on the passengar side, not really sure of it's purpose.

I have a few rattles here and there. I thing they are coming from the back interior. I need to sit back there while wife drives so I an attempt to pin point the noise.

It's on the passenger side to protect the nearby wires from being pinched by the shock during closing.
