That's what I do... not practical 'on-the-fly' though... and for such a simple and important feature, you'd think they'd have a big ole button saying "MIX". But then again, it took me a few minutes to work out how to switch it off

With the 9825 Alpine unit there was a button that cycled through the shuffle options. I'm about to get a new Alpine headunit for the 993 and the interface is a lot better than the one from 2 years ago.

For the CDR-220 here is the way to go:

First contact Becker of North America at 201-961-1300, and ask for part number BNA.1319.116. This will give you the plug for the rear of the radio and the keys to remove the radio. It cost about $16.00; aboout $25.00 shipped.

Next go to this link, http://www.autosound2000.com/ipodadapters.htm. This plugs into the cables that Becker gives you and then to the bottom of the iPod. The best thing about this unit is it charges the iPod while you're using it. It runs about $30.00. Need any more info let me know.

I've found it, but it doesn't seem to work. Never shuffles, even with MIX ON...

AFAIK there are no RCA jacks on the back of a stock head unit and no AUX setting. That's why you need to connect to the changer RCA's and select the changer to listen to the iPod. I'm interested in investigating Chuck's solution.

The first photo is the plug with two RCA plugs that Becker sells; the second is the connector that Auto Sound sells.

I can vouch for Chuck's solution -- he installed mine. You must use the CDR-220 (not CDR-210), and you must use the iPod itself for all controls (as far as I know, you can't control it through the head unit), but it works exactly as it should once you get it set up. There are more sophisticated solutions out there, but I wanted to keep a stock Porsche head unit.

Does this use the aux input (if there is one on the 220) thus allowing you to also use the changer? That would be an advantage, and the charging of the iPod would be an improvement over my approach. Otherwise the functionalilty of my setup is the same without the need to upgrade to a 996/986 head unit.

For the CDR-220, the aux input is indeed how the iPod is connected. I don't know whether that preserves the use of a CD changer, since I don't have one and didn't have to worry about it. I'm sure someone out there knows.

Fred...The aux plug uses the same plug area as the CD changer, so if you use the iPod plug the changer (in the trunk) can't be used.

Good to know. Your method requires an updated radio but you get the charging functionalilty for the iPod. My route uses the stock radio but you don't get the charging function. Excellent info, thanks!

The last finishing touch on the set-up Chuck speaks of (which is exactly what I have), is the installation of a "ground loop isolator" which can be purchased at your local Radio Shack. It's very easy to install and will reduce/eliminate the "whining" that you get through the speakers when the ipod is hooked up.
