Default Before I pull the trigger... please help! EDIT: Trigger's Pulled!

Hi all,
I've had a love affair with the 911 all of my life and am very close to closing the deal on one. I've been glued to the archives as I research issues and model differences. I've found a nice '95 Carrera and am seeking your advice. I know a PPI is highly recommended, and used them to pass on several cars already. I drove this one and I'm in love though... she could be "the one"! I've had enough BMW diversions and want to join this club.

A couple of questions:
-Will I have any problems bringing an out of state car into California and getting it to pass smog? (assuming its unmolested) Will a LWFW affect smog results?
-The front bumper and fenders were resprayed(not the hood) due to rock chips. It looks like a quality job... but is concerning. (I put the car on a lift and could detect no damage or cover-up) Could rock chips have so damaged the fenders and bumper but have left the hood unscathed?

Your help is appreciated,
Doug

Yes, it is common to have front fenders sprayed since many shops prefer to paint panels rather than try to blend, but really depends on color -- what color is this car? Are you sure the hood wasnt resprayed as well?

Shouldnt have any problems smogging a 1995 model, any state.

Where in SoCal are you located? Tell us more about the car!!

I'm out in VA right now in school (USMC). I'll be back in SoCal this spring. My only concern about telling too much about the car is that somebody else will get to it before I do! It has 60K on it, new clutch and brakes... runs like a top and is clean underneath... and not the "I just pressure washed it" type either. The price is in the low 30s... which sounds about right. It is guards red...and the hood wasn't resprayed (to my untrained eye and the owner's admission at least).

I'd like to snap this up and have it waiting in the garage for me when I get back from the next deployment!

If you haven't already, look for the options sticker under the hood near the latch. It should be there. If not, further investigation would be a good idea.
Also, pop the little fasteners under the bonnet behind the bumper (the spare tire cover). You can get a good peek at the back side of the bumper and look for any repair work. It's hard to hide an accident if you know where to look.

It does seem odd that the fenders would get reprayed and not the hood. The hood is a rock magnet.

I would be surprised if the bumper on a 60k car was sprayed for chips and the "unsprayed" hood was chip free - that would be hard to imagine based on my hood with 59k.

Agree - just make sure you get it registered shortly after it gets here - those $&@#*s at the DMV charge some nasty late fees.

hey doug ~ bol on the search ( & thx for serving our country! )

fwiw: may want to get one of these puppies http://www.autopaintgage.com/ ((( no aff'l ,etc )))... i'd still have a great indie-shop run a PPI including the sai test w/ the PST2 (diagnostic unit)... a 30 second test that's worth it's weight in gold.

smoging should be fine, if nothing has been changed from stock... fwiw: i picked mine up in mi. & drove to socal... smogged three times since w/ no isssues & mine's a 'my97'

i have no doubt you will be most happy w/ your 993 experience if you get a good-one.

allthebest & please post when ya get her!

also, i agree w/ others here if the bumper & fenders were painted for chips there would have been some pitting on the hood too... esp @ around 60k. btw: how's the windshield? (orig, or replaced?)...... 30 something sounds very good for a no-issue car imho.

Thanks for all of the support guys, it's really appreciated.
Wow, that paint guage is expensive! I'll have to check the hood again, as well as behind the spare tire area. The hood does have the options code sticker and it matches up. I pulled the trunk carpet near the front. All of the fender bolts seem untouched, but I guess that doesn't mean too much.

Well, no point in trying to hog it for myself... you guys are obviously here to help me out. Here's the link to the add. I know... it's eBay.
911 add

I was skeptical until I spoke with the shop owner and actually saw the car. Please let me know what you think. I can already hear it... it's too low!

Thanks again,
Doug

Looks good, but do yourself a favor and fork out the $200 to get a good PPI from someone who knows 993s before you spend $30k on a car with a lurking $3-8k problem. Search this board or ask for a local recommendation. Good luck and thanks for serving!

Too low? Nah.. looks good.
Looks like the options sticker is there... good sign.
On the paint guage, you can always unload it on eBay and recoupe most of your cost. Just an idea.

Good luck with it!
I recently bought a GR one also. It's in pieces right now... to replace the clutch... AND to get it lower

Default Smogging car bought out of state...

Is not usually a problem, as long as car passes smog. Not trying to be funny, just trying to point out if car has been modified, or does not comply with smog emissions limits, it will be your responsibility to bring the car into compliance.

If you can, have car emissions checked before you buy. See if local Porsche dealer service can do this for you. You might want to call a CA Porsche dealer service department and ask what kind of tests your Porsche dealer can perform there to verify car will pass emissions tests once in CA.

If you don't, and you find when you try to have car smog inspected here and if it fails, you could be staring at huge bill.

I brought in an '02 Boxster purchased new out of state and it passed smog with flying colors. However, because it was an '02 I could query the readiness monitor results and other things, including MIL on/off state (though the in-dash CEL was not lit but was working properly) and had almost 100% confidence car would pass emissions.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Looks like a nice car. I also went from an E36 M3 to my 993. Haven't look back.
Get the PPI and move on this car if it checks out.
Best of luck,
chuck
