Default "Definitive" Porsche Info source

Hi all,

I have been in the market for a new 997 and was planning on picking one up next Spring. However, I have also been looking at some of the older Porsches (let's say mid-80s - mid-90's) and I really like the styling. Also, someone suggested that since I am new to Porsches (I was and still am a hard-core Bimmer lover) that I may want to start with an older used one, vice jumping right in at $80k-plus. Given that, I am beginning to think I may look for used first.

Are there any links or books out there that are considered the 'bible' as far as what to look for when buying used, and explains in painful detail the differences by model year? Why one should get (just for example) a 94 instead of a 93? I have pretty good general knowledge of Porsches but I am sorely lacking on the details. Based on my preferred model years I am looking for, it sounds like I would be looking at 964's or 993's, no? Basically speaking, what is the difference between the two? Both air cooled, or...?

Thanks for helping the noob, and pardon my P-car ignorance...

Adrian Streather's book "993: King of Porsches" is the most detailed book on the 993 that I have found. It is available on Amazon. Adrian also posts here, so you can do a search.

We are pretty biased towards 993's on this forum, but either a 964 or 993 would be a great way to migrate from BMW's. That is what I did and I couldn't be happier with the 993. Good luck.

Actually, there is a lot of great information here on the 964 and 993 boards. Search function will present you will more info that you'd probably like to know.

That said, the 993 is the result of over 30 years of development. These are truly great cars!!

Thanks guys. Indeed, I am wearing out the search function, but as we all know it isn't perfect. Definitely there is an incredible amount of info on this board. Just wondering if there was a 'consolidated' source (i.e. book) I could use in conjunction with this website, so I found what I was looking for. Thanks again!
