Cool They are for sale, in Europe, and rarely...

in the US and Canada. Be prepared to pay big bucks for the car, maybe up to $100,000 US, and then have it tweeked to meet Canadian safety standards. Adrian mentions that less than 1,200 were built, total model run.

If you want the scoop on the differences between the 993 and the 993RS and 993 RS CS (Club Sport), get Adrian Streather's new book, Porsche 993, The Essential Companion. Adrian is a Rennlist Technical Adviser as well.

If you want a car for less money, about $85,000 (US), that will run circles around the 993 RS CS, get a 2004 or later GT3 car...100 more HP, and a very modern car with emissions controls in place, air bags too.

Yesterday, a 993 RS could be had for Euros 80K for a good one and 100K for an exceptional one. For an RSCS, you must add some to that...

I tried both a GT3 and 993 RS before I made my choice. If all you want is speed... the GT3 has it. If you want a collector car imbued with Porsche traditions, it is a 993.

I almost got a 993 RSCS ISO my RS. Constant complaints from the war ministry forced me to change my choice... wish I had gotten a RSCS just like clubsport1 did...

I too could have bought a GT3 instead of an RS CS, I had an order for a new 996 GT3RS, when it was time to finalise the spec I couldn't bring myself to sell my old 993RS so let the order go to the next in line.

I have to say the GT3 engine is better than that fitted to the RS, but that is all.....I much prefer the turn in and handling of the 993, plus the running costs are considerably less....the GT3 is a bigger and heavier car and more of a GT car than a sportscar to me.

Although I have driven GT3 on track, they were not my cars so never really pushed them to the limit, I do get the impression that a GT3 is a difficult car to drive VERY quickly...an average driver can pedal one reasonably well....but getting the extra out of them is for the brave and skilful.

As to Gt3 running rings round an RS ??? Dream on!!!
The skilled pilots are definitely quicker, but I often get average GT3 guys come up and enquire about the mods to my car.....when you mention it is standard and about 300bhp they are even more amazed....an RS is not about outright speed..it is the handling finesse and ease of control along with exceptional build quality which is the reason I choose to own one over a kettle.

Were any of these cars brought into the US at the time? Is it 'legal' to do so now? Is that why there are clones in the 'States?

I know of a RSCS clone that may still be available in the Chicago area that has club raced the past few years. Speed yellow, 3.8 motor, sunroof removed, correct wings, rollbar only (I think).

I called Hoehn and Pioneer (San Diego dealers) today and they no longer carry the 993 RS parts. They recommended I talked to PCNA about the 993 RS / RSR parts - not good news! PCNA has basically stopped stocking 993 racing / RS parts. They mentioned they're close to doing the same with the 996 and will only be concentrating on the 997 racing type parts.

However, they mentioned that a man in Germany that races and own a couple of porsche dealerships bought about every 993 race part they had in inventory throughout the world, a Manfred Frey???? Anybody know of this gentleman or his business address? Does he have a website?

Your dealers are confusing parts for the street-driven RS with racing parts previously sold by Porsche Motorsports North America (PMNA). PMNA sold their 964/993 inventory to Charile Spira @ Wrightwood Racing and he turned around and sold stuff to Gaylon Bieker @ Werks II. But you don't want to put cup car or racing (RSR) parts on your street driven 993, stick with parts from the RS. With very few exceptions the RS parts have basically never been stocked by PCNA and always have to be delivered from Germany. Did you ask for a specific part?

I came across a guy, I think was in Texas who was importing genuine euro spec RS's into the US. I'll try to find his name. I think it was Steve something.
