Route Twisk

Route Twisk was originally built to improve the infrastructure for the British military based in Shek Kong. Since this base is nestled into the northern side of Tai Mo Shan (Hong Kongs highest point), British forces could easily be trapped against the mountain should they be attacked by an invading force. The road was therefore built from Shek Kong to Tsuen Wan as an escape route, complete with chambers underneath for demolishing the road at various intervals to prevent any attackers from pursuing . The road is very windy and quite steep climbing up to a saddle then dropping down the other side to Tsuen Wan(which is the way we drove ). Because of this, it is a favourite for powerful cars/ bikes. You can really go for it without breaking the speed limit (by much ) The label of the road on the drawings was Route TW/SK i.e. Route Tsuen Wan to Shek Kong. During construction it was read as Route TWISK and [fortunately] the name stayed after completion. It is always thought that the road was mis-spelt from the word TWIST becuase of the twisty nature of the road. Anyway thats the story......
