Default Check belt light: 10 bad seconds in my Red Thing

Today on the drive home my check belt light illumined for about 5 seconds and then went off. It took me about 10 seconds to remember I wasn't in a 928 and it didn't mean the same thing as it would if I was in a V8 powered car with a 7 foot timing belt...

After I pulled over I could see my belts were intact, but somewhat worn. The engine was very cold when this happened.

I guess I will be replacing the belts, and maybe the sensor too. I see there's several different belts to choose from. My car has an M6407 engine. Which belts should I use? The p-car site lists the choices, but not in a table format, so I can't tell for sure which ones to order.

Is there a place online that sells the star-tipped wrench as well? And should I order extra shims? From where?

Thanks in advance.

You can get the 12 point wrench 999-571-052-02 and shims from Sunset Porsche.
The wrench is $32.
You can also get 12 point bit from any NAPA auto store for $10.

If you get the napa version, you will need some way to shorten the 12 point tool. I used a cutoff wheel in a die grinder.

You can get a complete set of the 12pt wrenches from Autozone for like $5.00

You'll have to cut the one down to proper length.

Thanks for the good info. Belts are on order.

NOW: where can I order a day somewhat above freezing when I can do this work?

You can get the porsche tool from Pelican Parts for $27 plus shipping. The porsche tool number is 999 571 052 02. Just ordered mine. I couldn't find any 12 points at my local autozone or napa.

Thaddeus,
If you're diving into a belt replacement, make sure you have the updated upper pulley. From what I've read, the pulley 'halves' feature a slightly different profile. The outer half will no longer use the chamfered washer under the nut.

A pic of the 12 point wrench used for the job would be great help in trying to track one down here. seems like an essential bit of kit to carry along.
Thanks in anticipation.

Above is a link to a picture I tool while changing my alternator brush assembly. Its the ******-On tool. I use a 7/16" wrench on the end of it as I havent had a chance to weld-on a proper handle that will clear in a 993TT as there is even less clearance.

MUST I update the pulley or is it optional? I'd rather avoid the expense if it's not necessary right now...

You don't have to but it's a good idea.

in my tiny experience, I have seen dead threads in alternator shafts that looked sooo ugly, that even
after purchasing the porsche tool, I refrained from using it.
Instead, I purchased the central nut plus the three 6-pan screws holding the middle pulley for $2.
I removed the Big central nut with a chisel and a small hammer. One small tap with the chesiel at 11 o'clock on the nut
and it comes loose.
later, two out of the three 6-pan screws came out easy, but the third took a chisel blow as well.
installed the new ones when mounting. cost, $2. loss = $27 with the porsche tool un-used.
