Default Lifters - Part III

This started as a hunt to quiet an engine ticking noise, and after hours of labor (and some cursing), I'm hopeful that this is the final chapter.....

Got some time off after thanksgiving, so I decided to gather up the parts and replace the intake hydraulic lifters (did the exhaust lifters a couple weeks ago, but still ticking). I didn't have the tools to drop the engine like JohnD did, but gave it a go with the engine in.

I followed the instructions posted on p-car.com as if I were changing the spark plugs (oh yeah, did that too), and took off both the left and the right side engine shrouds (or whatever you call them). This way I could remove the intake valve covers from below! After that, the rest was fairly easy.... the whole job took about a day to finish (I'm a 993 newbie).

After all is said and done, I fired up the engine and it was still ticking initially. Once the engine warmed up, the ticking noise faded. Drove the car on some backroads and it sounded great. Just some slight valve train/lifter noise now, but definitely a HUGE improvement!

My next step is to change the engine oil and filters after this tank of gas. Then it's time for RSR mufflers, big ovals, suspension (oh no.... the slippery slope strikes again!).

Wow, congrats on an impressive first DIY on the 993 (I take it you know your way around an engine). My first DIY was rear hood shocks!

Good job in the intakes! Definitely easier from below once you remove the shielding and mufflers. I do the plugs from below as well.

Chris,

I was surprised to find how much room there was once those engine shields came off.... and you don't even have to remove anything from above.

Hard to tell.... the car seems to be faster, but that could just be the sweeter music from the engine.
