They are two completely different cars. Both are fun and only you can decide which one is best for you.
They both have service costs associated with them but unlike other cars they both last a very long time.
The 993 has many new improvements all around that would make it more desireable but when it comes
down to picking, get the one that has the color you like most. Chris

the 993 i a very beautiful car, has a great *** but the front is weak. 964s have the timeless front , but a weak ***. so would you pick an ugly woman with a nice *** or a beautiful one with a flat ***?

I had a 964 for 3 years then upgraded to a 993. the 964 was far less reliable as compared to the 993. so for that one reason (i won't go to looks as it is subjective) i'd go for the 993. i'll also point out a number of other reasons to go for the 993:

- brakes are superior on the 993
- bigger wheel & tire fitment
- i like the multi-link suspension although it eats rear tires

as far as ride comparassion. the 964 felt more raw powerful , the 993 feels faster. after the lwf they acutally both feel the raw power.

pro's for the 964:
- better geared tranny, albeit only a 5sp.

so for me the 993 is the clear victor.

Yes, the trunk is larger.
The 964 has a 77L tank.
The 993 has a 72L tank !!!

I have spent lots of time in both and wouldn't be ashamed to own and drive either but my final choice is obvious.

Suspension is better in the 993 but it was really styling that moved me to 993's. To me the 964 looks exactly the same as an 85 Carrera with an aero looking front & rear bumper and smoother rockers, and as a matter of fact if you buy the 964 bumpers and rockers then put them on your 85 you wouldn't know if the car was built in 85 or 92 unless you popped the engine cover open or looked at the VIN.

993's are absolutely the best body styling of 911's ever done and you won't see the 964 board guys talking about the lines of their 911's like we do.

Motors are near the same but I really love the 6 speed vs the 5 and a 993's rear suspension speaks for itself.

You'll be happy with either, but IMHO you would be just a bit more in a 993!

Good luck with your hunt.......ZP44

i think the 993 is a great daily driver 911. however, if i were looking for a weekend toy, i'd be awfully tempted to get either a 993...or something a little different and a little older like a 87-89 911 (or maybe even 84-86 carrera). the 964 doesn't interest me at all.

What everyone else said

BTW, the windshield rakes are identical. From what I remember, the 993 roofline from the bottom of the A-pillar all the way back is the only sheet metal that was a carryover from the 964. They "wanted" to change it, but didn't because that move would be very costly.

"The 993 is a better car than the 964............the 964 is a better 911 than the 993" ........................... a very interesting observation, it's a tricky choice............I've had both, I have a late model 993, so I am biased............
I prefer My 993 pretty much hands down........but my old 964 was a great car.................very very expensive to put right, having been abused by previous owners.

this hasn't been noticed yet, but i think the controls on the 993 are a bit better. the pedal action is smoother and the steering is more comfortable, in my opinion. i like the shifting action on the 964 better though.

just a thought...seeing as these things are what you might notice straight away.

Overall I think the 993 is the better car from the standpoint of handling, suspension, and technology. The 964 has the more classic lines and I'm drawn to the ones that have been lowered and have the look. Wish I could have one of each. Happy hunting.

Read the Porsche "Red Book" for manufacturing and technical differences between the two. There was very little carry over from the 964 to the 993 series other than some body parts, hood, etc. From an engineering perspective, the 993 is a much more modern car without the engine ills associated with the ealier 964's. I think Red Book mentioned that 85% of the 993 was new engineering/parts vs. the 964. I bought a 993 with no regrets whatsoever.

Thanks so much everyone!

Couple more questions:

- What will I be looking at spending for a good, solid, daily driver 993 coupe?
- Which car has the better air-conditioning?

If you're willing to wait for the right car at the right price, my guess is around 25 give or take a few Ks. If you want it NOW, low to mid 30s sounds about right but ymmv. Afa the ac question, someone else will have to chime...
Good luck

all 911 a/c suck's somewhat, but my 993's seems to do the best on So Cal 100 deg days when compared to my older Carrera & 911SC.

My 993's evaporator was replaced right before I bought the car Aug of last year and the system was freshly recharged then so I can't comment on maintaining the system.

IMHO
I'm sure the 993 has all the benefits others have said above, although I haven't driven one. And I agree they look good.
Not so sure about whether I'd buy a 964 (except a special, ie. turbo or RS which look and go good).
If you want the most character (read driver's car) and value go straight for a pre 964 911.

PS: All assuming cars in good condition.
