I suppose though that there is a small thermal benefit, ie. getting rid of heat better than plastic.... Plus, hey, they look pretty pimp. I know you can't really see them, but it's like lingerie for your car.

I can make another (unaffiliated) recommendation for the IA billet aluminum covers. I've had them on my 964 for about a year now and the leaks have stopped (it would put down a spot or two of oil after getting fully warmed up before, precluding me from parking it on my driveway). Keep in mind that there are actually two sets of valve covers -- upper and lower. Each set is $299, so it's $600 in parts if you do both upper and lower. Supposedly, you only need the lowers (because they're more likely to leak with gravity forcing oil to collect at the bottom), but my mechanic guilted me into doing both. I can't comment on labor, as I had mine installed while the car was getting its 15k valve adjustment, so there was no additional labor cost.

Hyphenf15: welcome to Rennlist!!!
If you don't have leaking valve covers, then there is no benefit of course. It all has to do with how you drive the car.

On several of the track/street cars that I and friends own, doing 10-15 track events each season in the Instructor run groups, we experienced leaks EVERY season with properly installed plastic covers and new seals. None of us has seen another leak since installing the billet aluminum covers several seasons ago.

We only needed them on the lower valve covers, where heat is the issue. The $299 price is for a pair of the lower covers with seals, etc., not per each cover.

Do the aluminum covers have the same holders for the spark plug wires or are the wires just loose? At this point I'm sold!!

Screw them c/f valve covers, I'm waiting for my c/f RS side skirts!

I paid 499US for mine years ago from Eagle Day... I can't believe they are only $299 now =O(

But damn they look so sweeeeet! No leaks!

Anyone know where I can get a matching red anodized top set?

Eagle Day still sells them. Today they have them on their website for over $500 a pair, on sale for $499! They were the only game in town until IA came out with theirs at $299 a pair. I would just get the IA covers, as nobody sees them once in the car.

i have leaky lowers too. i've replaced the lower left gaskets once, and the po has had them replaced once in the past without success.

i have a question.

has anyone tried to replace the covers with the factory units without any success? did this make you change to the aluminum covers as a result?

i'd like to know.

I didn't bother going back to factory units. Others have gone back with success but if you track your car it is possible the leaks may start again. I just bit the bullet and got the billet ones. Hope this helps. Cost of factory items may be about $120 if I recall. Someone with more accurate pricing will chime in.

Hargett offers a set of upper & lower 993 covers for $535. Their site has changed since I last visited and I'm not able to see the covers in detail.

I haven't seen their offerings, but they are likely also good choices. Just be certain that everything you need is included for the price quoted. IA includes a new gasket and all new hardware, including the plug wire clips.

Just ordered valve covers from Imagine Auto. Great folks and they gave me a 10% discount as a Rennlist member!! Covers have holders for the spark plug wires and come with gaskets and hardware. Can't wait to install them and get rid of my oil leaks. I'll take pictures of the project around x-mas time frame. Can't wait for the UPS truck to get here!!!!
