Bypassing the immobilizer
The car I am looking to buy is having issues with the immobilizer. The batterys are new, and the shop doing the PPI wants to bypass this permanently.
Would you do this or not?
Thanks,
Oliver

Do you mean that they donot want the immobilizer test in the PPI?

Oliver,
I never park my car where I worry about it being stolen. I would ditch the immobilzer. I'm not sure this will be easily accomplished however. Or even possible. Please keep us posted.

The immobilizer is the biggest PIA. Make sure it is part of the PPI. Also make sure that there's more than one FOB. Take it to a shop that is familiar with it.

To buypass systems like the immobilizer is not a good idea and no matter what some say here on rennlist, they are not a major souce of problems in 993's.
I would pass on this car or take it to a well qualified Porsche specialist and make the immobilizer reapair part of the purchase. Either have the current owner have it fixed or get a estimate and have that deducted from the final figure.

Common weakspot? Have you owned a car with the immobilizer before??? I haven't experienced any problems with mine, knock on wood. I'm not saying that they can't have problems, but I wouldn't consider them a "common weakspot". I think the general consensus is that they are more of an annoyance than something that needs to be taken out of the car permanently. I would suggest just getting it fixed/putting in a new immobilizer unit. Which, from what I understand, isn't a huge deal.
Here's what lorenfb had to say in another thread about taking them out:
After reading Loren's posts, I wouldn't take it out. There are enough fault code problems with OBDII cars as it is, you don't need someone who will never see the car again (the mechanic performing the PPI) adding to them. If you are having immobilizer problems that the shop doing the PPI can't solve, or is reluctant to solve, you should pm Loren. Or you can visit www.systemsc.com
If you do need an immobilizer unit, I think that ceboyd might have a brand new one for sale, you should pm her and ask if she still has it. Good luck!

He thought his immobilizer was bad and swapped it out, to find out it was fuse #14 (me thinks) that was blown. Once it was replaced, voila everything was fine and now he has an extra one.
