1995 Versus 1996 - 1998?

I am new to the 993 and recently drove a 1996 C2 and was quite impressed with the sound, handling, steering, looks, etc. Have been reading and learning on this excellent Forum. I discovered there are a few specialty dealers who sell 993s, and it seems like their 1995 inventory is smaller. Also seems like quite of few 993 owners here have the 1995. Is this because of an increased desirability of the 1995 because it eliminates the CEL from the SAI with OBDII?

The truth be told ..... in 95 they hit the target with a bullseye . they were concern about hitting the bulleyes for the 96-98 run ...so in order to compensate for any errors they gave them a few xtra ponies to try to keep close to the 95
it almost work IMHO 96-98 a very close second

I bought a 95 because... it was the color combination that I had always wanted and it was the nicest I had come accross within my budget. If it had been a 96, 97 or 98, it would not have changed anything. Honestly, get the nicest you can find and do not worry too much about side issues.

I don't think I'd say 1995's are considered more desirable AFAIK. The popular literature practically rules out 1995 due to non-varioram.
After owning a varioram ('96) 993 that was waaaaay down on power (215 rwhp), the theoretical power advantage of varioram meant absolutely nothing to me. And I've never gotten worked up over the SAI CEL risk. I just bought the car I liked (which is, incidentally, the best advice we can give you).

You know, when it comes to the 95 vs the 96-98 cars, it's really a very personal preference thing. My meger thoughts go like this. The 95: no VarioRam, no SAI CEL issue, first build year, basket handle (most of them), less expensive. The 96-98: Varioram, SAI CEL issue, last built for 97 narrowbody and 98 others, no basket handle, more expensive. You have to decide which of these things are important to you and which are not. To me, I really don't like the basket handle, so one with it would be out. SAI CEL issue isn't a big issue for me (I don't have it) because I don't have to pass smog checks. As much as anything else, I think most people find/see a car in their desired color combo, in acceptable condition, at a price they like, and just buy it without a GREAT deal of regard to the year...again, unless a particular desired/undesired model year feature is on the car. My suggestion is to find as clean of car as you can get for your money. To me, a good mechanical car with beat-up interior/exterior is LESS desirable than a fair mechanical car with a great interior/exterior...just my take...everybody differs on this sorta thing...

Got the '95 for the reasons Allen mentioned.
Sure wouldn't mind another 30-40 ft-lbs in the midrange, though. IMO, one of the 993s greatest shortcomings.

As an owner of a 95', I have to agree that the 96-98's have more midrange power & torque but at what cost? OBDII, CEL, SAI problems have been costly and very annoying to owners of the vario cars (96-98) and very much influenced my decision to find and buy a very late build one owner 95'.
The 95's are as fast at top end and handle the same as later 993's so unless you drove them side by side you would not really be able to appreciate the difference between them.
Buying any 993 is going to be a process of elimination and you will finally have to make your decision on an individual car based on color, condition and PPI.
One thing I can promise is, once you own and drive a 993, you will be spoiled for almost anything else with wheels.
Good Luck in your search.............ZP44
