You can always ask if Porsche options are worth the cost, because the prices are crazy. For example, an option for a $700 for self dimming rear view mirror when it is a standard option on most cars. It goes on and on.

I have to say though the aluminum shifter and E-brake make a big difference over the plain stock black ones. Since I have them I'll say there work it.

Steve,

Can I buy your Original Black gear shift lever off you??

If you decide to upgrade of course.

Ash,

Yes you can buy my old gear shift lever and emerg brake. Just PM me off line and make me an offer before I list it!

Thx again everyone else. I'll take a look at some of the shifters and brakes this weekend at our local Meet and Drive and see if the carbon version might be a better bet. I'm betting not, but we'll see.

Cheers,
Steve R

is spending this much money on these 2 items really unnecessary and maybe there's a better way to blow $750?
this is obviously an opinion, but it is hard to imagine that the shift stick or the e-brake will really change the driving experience very much. i'd save my $ for other mods, or other things...just my 2 cents

I bought the the alum/carbon MY02 shifter and ebrake from Gert earlier this year and never regretted it, even tho they are pricey. Terrific upgrade in appearance and matches well with the silver instrument rings that Jeff organized this year. And dare I say, i think the shifting is a little less notchy, but I'm sure that's just me...I say go for it.

Are the '02 996 shifter and the RS shifter the same thing?
No, they are not.

Thank you. I didn't think they were but reading a previous post seemed to indicate they were.

Wow, I just realized that the carbon fiber shifter is "only" $70 more than the regular one from Carnewal ($851 vs $781). Which would you get, for a black interior? Shipping from Belgium is included and gosh, at those prices, it should be!

vs this:

vs this for $794, though I wasn't considering this one too hard:

vs this for $717, though it's a distant 4th place for me:

I know I have to decide, but... any thoughts?

Thx,
Steve R

Steve,
Carbon fiber is indeed neat-o, but our 993s are so old school. Which is part of the attraction for me. I've never been fond of the full carbon fiber (Exclusive) interior. Just seems too high-tech for these relics.

My vote is for the aluminum/leather MY02. It has a certain presence that the painted plastic RS **** in my car lacks. Someday...

Good point, Andreas. Old school is right! So I'm guessing you feel that the carbon fiber set is more appropriate in the newer models? Obviously the 993 TT's have carbon fiber dashes, so the CF shifter and brake might look better in those, but not mine where there is no CF.

Steve,
Either **** will be an improvement over the stock baseball-bat-handle design. But yes, I feel that random interior carbon fiber bits are better suited to the new flock of cars. Remember, we have wooden floorboards!

I would also not spend the money on a carbon fiber license plate frame

I added a Ruf shift handle (from eBay) simply because it said "Ruf". I was surprised by the great feel of the shifter (and the Ruf steering wheel... also eBay). These feel sooooo good, it makes driving the car a sweeter experience. Non-essential? You bet your *** it is, but then if all we wanted was essential transportation, we'd be driving Nissan Sentras.

I guess I'm simple/old school. I've sometimes looked at my plain-jane, black, featureless shifter wondering if I would get more enjoyment out of the car if it had a different feel to it and only concluded that a new shifter would not enhance my driving pleasure one iota. On the track and on the street, the old stick feels as natural as my Momo Mod .07 wheel. $750 is 3/4 of a set of Hoosiers. Different strokes.

I'm also not a fan of carbon fiber veneer swathed over interior bits. Because it serves no purpose, it only seems to further enhance the bling connotations of the material. CF hoods, sunroof panels and the like are cool because they actually take away weight, but I'd still want them painted. FWIW, which is not much.

Steve,

Even though I bought the alu/carbon shifter, I would have preferred the alu/leather one. Since the original e-brake is alu/carbon, I just wanted them to match, and didn't want to replace the e-brake handle either.

Go with the aluminum-leather one!
