4th Brake Light

4th Brake Light
I obtained this 1996 C2 about a year ago with limited information about the car from the previous owner (he had moved to Italy and put the car on consignment with a local dealer).
The car has been fantastic and I’ve found no surprises except for the fact that it has both the upper window brake light and a basket handle light. At first I thought it might be a replacement engine boot, but it appears to be the factory original with factory wiring and paint. Carfax showed no accidents nor does my mechanic think there was any rebuilding of the rear.
I have seen one other 1996 C2 with both the basket handle and upper light at a dealer’s showroom. But again, limited information on the dual lights.
Does anyone know if Porsche produced some 1996’s in this configuration? I know some 95’s had only the upper light so I doubt they were using up the remaining trunk lids. Was it an option or special order item?
I’ll say one thing, when I tap the brakes because I have someone tailgating me, they back off fast!

This is not a factory configuration. Sounds like the PO had an affinity for brake lights. Kinda looks cool at first, but then not - IMHO. Gotta say though that the Turquoise Metallic looks stellar!

There is a PCA club member who has a 993 with both lights, from the factory. I always thought that was a bit strange.
Good news for you, just remove the basket handly and your already set
Love the plate, btw.

That’s a great idea to use the bumper plugs! I was going to wait until I did a re-spray to remove it. I even have a couple of extra sets of plugs because they had to do a special run to match the paint.

hmmm... thought graham did this waaay back when w/ plugs, as he did not want to fill 'em & wanted to keep the metal original. i know there's a few threads on basket handle (3rd brake light mod) if you do a search.
others will add i'm sure...
btw: i love the "sans h20" plate... very intelligent

It appears the holes are too close together for the bumper plugs. Oh well, it's got 75K of mostly freeway miles with a ton of rock chips on the front. I need to get it re-sprayed anyway and I'll have them remove it and weld the holes closed.
