Default Noisy Lifter Saga....

I have read the previous posts and I will wish that my mechanic had read them as well, before he changed my lifters.
It all started with a loud clanky noise that was identified by the mechanic as noisy lifter.
We discussed it and I decided that since one or more was gone and since we were going to open her up on both sides, that we might as well do all lifters.

As I was expecting the car to be ready I called and was informed that all had not gone well, and that the lifters now were noisier than before.

He was going to let the car cool off and try again, no luck

I had been given a brief explanation how the hydraulic lifters operated and the first thing that came to my mind was what apparentlly is the solution, soaking the lifters.
My question is this;

1- Can any damage be done by not soaking the lifter
2- Can these lifters be kept now that they were operated without oil
3- Could other damage be there to show in the future
4- What could have caused the original noisy lifter
5- What amount of time is fair, to change all lifters and one rocker arm.

Thanks in Advance

Sounds like you're having the same trouble I had when I changed my lifters. I had some that just would NOT build up pressure. I soaked all mine and it helped but it didn't solve all of them. I had probably 4 that just refused to shut up so I had to pull htem and replace them with other new ones. Of those, I think I still had one or two that required replacing. Definately not a job I want to be doing again.
But, it shouldn't hurt the car (at idle) to run for a bit to try and get the lifters to fill with oil. It is hard to listen to the racket though.

If it were me, I'd ask if they only kept the engine at idle when they re-started it? If so, the lifters are *probably* fine..??

I did soak mine overnight before the install, though? As well - when I went to restart the car - I also pulled the coil wires and cranked until the OP came up a bit. I then let it sit for a while, reconnected the coils - and that was that..? Fortunately - I didn't have to go through what Lee went through above - as all 12 of mine were fine..??

Let us know how this works out, OK???

Best to you!

I dont feel just soaking these guys in oil will be enough to purge them with oil due to the small orifice and the rather thick oil when cold.

Best would be to push oil through them with a syringe (and a creative fixture) much like I always do when installing Carrera oil pressure fed chain tensioners.

When I replaced 6 left side lifters, they didnt pump up right away either. It wasnt until then I realized that pushing oil through them would be best. Running the car at 2000 rpms for about five minutes is what did the trick.

Ig gads, Chris, 5 minutes of that racket?!! I did mine years ago, but I remember serious, ungodly valve clatter for what I think was for almost a minute, and I could barely stand that ...I thought for sure I was rattling my valve train into oblivion, but she eventually quieted down. I think anything longer and I would have shut her down just out of fear. Did it really take 5 minutes to pump them up to pressure?
