OT: supreme test of a paintless dent guy (on my Scion)
#16
i guess someone got mad and used it as a punching bag. Odd way to vandalise a car, usually they key it, break windows or taillamps, i havent seen people punch sheet metal before. I hope they broke a bone in their hands, but based on the damage i suspect the car took all the beating.
that sucks

Steve the PDR guy might be able to do it. I had a basketball-sized dent removed from my previous truck and it looked great. The dent was under a piece of trim and it still came out. Cost me $85 and he came to where I work and did the job right in the parking lot.

The PDR guy is out there now. He thinks he can make it close to perfect. I'll post pictures when he is done. My fingers are crossed. This is the guy that went over Rufus a year ago and fixed EVERY tiny speck of a dent.

He's done. The results are a bit mixed, and may not show up well on photots, but I'll try. The surface of the rear hatch is pulled out OK, but is a bit "bumpy"... like a grapefruit. The door came out better but also has a few of the bumps. I think at this point, I can just leave it (it is, after all, just a Scion), or I can take it to a body shop for a bit of filler, some sanding and paint. My guess is about $1k for the body shop. When you think about it... that's almost enough to shave one of the gutters on Rufus!

Steve and Mark, how do you like your Scions? After working out of my house for years, I am contemplating a great position with a company that will require a 50mile RT commute. My 993 is a daily driver, but I've been thinking about something a little more suited to the rush-hour madness. The 993 can stay in the garage. What are your thoughts about safety with all those SUVs out there? thanks in advance.

TomF,
The Scion is a nice little package... gets me 32mpg in all sorts of driving conditions. Sure could use a 6th gear though... 4000 RPMs at 80 MPH in 5th! I'd also look at the Honda Fit and the base Mini (even the base mini is a lot more money though). I believe the Mini has a great rep for safety... although the Scion seems to crumple nicely, however (my son totalled our first one).
My fervent wish is those 6000 lb SUVs start fading off the road as people wake up to the waste they represent. In the meantime, my advice is to try to avoid getting hit by one.
I got pictures of the repaired Scion. I'll post them when I get home after work.

I didn't mean to imply that the totalling incident was his fault... at least not entirely. The recent incident was vandalism. Still... he's not as good a driver as he thinks he is, and he does scare the hell out of me.
