Most creative was the "Citromatic" in my '70 Citroen DS, with a hydraulically actuated (but no pedal) clutch - shifted by easing off the accelerator and moving the lever - which was on top of the steering column. Shift pattern, seen from above, looked like this:
First --------- Reverse
|
Start - Neutral
|
Second - Third - Fourth
And yes, to start the car you turned on the key, pressed the brake, which looked like a mushroom, and moved the shift lever to the left...which engaged the starter.

First car was a 1953 Mercury convertible, Flathead V8 with three on the tree, power seats and power windows. It was 13 years old an had less than 50,00 miles on it, original owner was my Grandmother's doc, who didn't out live the car. Mmmm, High school in a salmon over white, with white top, '53 Mercury. I added the "necker's ****" to the steering wheel as referenced above. Used to buy used axles by the bunch from the junk yard because it ate one or two a year.

In 1970 I owned a new Saab 96 for a short while (aka The Bottom Fish).....4 on the tree and a handle to pull for free-wheeling drive train, which was like shifting to neutral every time you let off the accellerator.

Sounds like my first, '61 Galaxy, I had to replace or rebuild the transmission annually. Those trips to church services on Sun. were murder.

1970 AMC Gremlin. That car cost me $1400 new and sold it for $500 12 years and 130K miles later. 3 on the tree baby!

Push button automatic...in the Dodge Dart with the 170 slant six. Wo Ho!

Saab had a 4 on the tree also Mercedes.

A freind showed up the other day with a '59 Mercedes 220S with the 4 on the tree. He has had it since 1966. It is in great shape.

My '54 Chev Bel Air I had in HS had the column shifter,...

Guess that dates me, too.

1972 Ford pick up. First time ever driving a stick. Needed to climb the hill from the beach at Rio Del Mar. That was a bitch.....

Exactly! My sister had a Bf for a while with an early '50s Ford. We often did "group buys" on axles.....
