My 1996 Cabriolet has the factory sound package and I want to replace the 4" rear speaker without cutting and ideally reuse the speaker grill. Does anyone of you have a recommendation which speaker will fit? Did someone use Focal FAA100CA?
I just replaced mine last week with a set of Alpine units. They were the only decent 4" that I could buy quickly and on the cheap (relative).
No need to go crazy back there since a 4" speaker doesn't put out all that much sound to begin with.
Gotta say that the new speakers do add a "crispness" that wasn't there prior.
Good luck and be mindful of the size of the magnet. The seatbelt mechanism is VERY close on the drivers side and can/will get in the way if your magnet is too large.
I went with a 4" Apline speaker as well. You can not fit anything else in there because of the top bracket folding down into the space. I installed a 4 channel amp and put in a subwoofer as well as a bluetooth head unit for my phone. Expensive but worth it - I can not drive without some tunes. Very happy.
I think a better upgrade for you would be to replace the front speakers with 6.5" speakers. MB Quart makes some very nice ones for around $200. This will add a moderate amount of bass for you and nice midrange. Focal also makes some but they are like $5k!!!! Adding the 6.5" will require you to widen the existing hole in the front door panel but this is minimal and will cost around $50 at any decent shop. Forget upgrading the rears for now because the most bang for your buck I think would be for the front speakers. Just my .02
I've swapped in 4" speakers in both my cabs. As others have said, don't spend too much money for these speakers...just go with a good name brand thats on sale at Crutchfield or other stereo stores. I think I spent less than $50-60 for each pair.
I disagree on the impact of the rear speakers but maybe it's because my seat is all the way back and I hear alot from my rears. I wouldn't go crazy $$ on them but don't skimp either. I would have to check on the cab top arms, I don't remember them being an issue for me, the seatbelt mechanism was more of an impact but only a minor one.
There are several threads on this going on at the same time, is there a way to combine them?
