Default 993 Audio system woes

Can any one of you help me out please ? I recently bought a 993 with the audio package, but someone had ripped out the head unit and cut off the plugs.

I can now find 3 'cables' in the dash :

1. The antenna cable (luckily plug attached) with the wire and faston for the antenna amp.
2. A cable with three cores (dark colors) which I presume are 12V permanent, 12V switched and neg.
3. A cable with iirc. 5 or 6 wires, blue, yellow, etc.

It is the third cable which I think goes to the amp. I can gather from the Becker schematics these are :

LF +
RF+
Neg
LR+
RR+.

Can anyone please tell me what color is supposed to be what ?
I'm assuming the outputs are standard 2V or less, so I'd like to put in a newfangled unit.

Many thanks in advance,

Peter R.

Search button would be your friend here .... but here you go...

Try this post of mine from a while back... the wire colors and connectivity details are given there. You are probably looking for the connectivity to the wire details shown for the 8 pin DIN connector - which I assune you don't have there anymore.

For the speaker wires you can take a 1.5v battery and just brush the wires to the battery and you'll get static from the speaker, this will verify which speaker you're working on.

Thanks for that.

What I was looking for is the wire colors on the C1-2-3 plug. The cable that's supposed tho fit in there has a braid (I'd guess signal earth), four thicker wires (probably audio signal) and TWO very thin wires, a red one and a green one. I suspect the red one is the amp RC, haven't a clue what the green one could be for.

Be spicific as to your year / model car and I'll look in the wiring diags. to see if I can figure them out. Also, did your car come w/ the Hi-Fi Audio setup (I don't know if it makes a diff. but all info may be helpful)? Porsche schematics can be a little befuddling for me but I haven't had to look at schematics on a regular basis for quite a few years.

Thans Bill.

It's a Dec. 1994 993 with the 10 speaker and amplifier Hifi option.

I'm looking for the color codes that connect the head unit to the amp. I have some scanned schematics, but they're not very legible.

Try checking the board at http://www.beckerautosound.com/. Otherwise, post the question there or e-mail them. Good luck.

I hate to tell you this but looking at the schematic for the 10 spkr/amp system it shows a connection from the head unit to the amp, w/ 5 or 6 connections, but it gives NO info for them. No wire size / color or what it does in the amp. It does have info for the outputs from the amp and most of the other inputs to the amp but not for that cable from the head unit.

Sorry 'bout that.
Geolab posted a link for Becker w/ tech info not too long ago, try searching for that posting.

No worries, I'll sort it out. I just hope Porsche stuck to the 'norm' and uses the thin blue wire for the amp remote on. I'll make it work somehow.

Thanks for the effort !

I wouldn't count on that. Just receintly someone posted about attaching a new non-Porsche Becker head unit and tried connecting it to an OE Porsche/Becker multi-CD Changer. Couldn't get it to work until he replaced the Porsche CD changer w/ a std Becker CD changer.

I have the hi-fi option on my Nov '94 993. I mapped out the connectors behind the head unit as best I could. Below is what I found. One of the connectors has more than one wire of the same color, so you'll have to figure out what's what another way. What I did was connect the power connector and jumper the power-on signal to the amp, so it turns on. Then, one by one, connect one of the head unit's audio outputs to each of the other wires and listen to which speaker it comes out of.

Anyway, I hope you can use this info.

Power Connector
BL +12 (always on)
BK Ground
WH AM Antenna? Security wire?
RE Power (switched)

Audio Connector (line level?)
BL Left Front +
RE Left Rear +
RE Right Front +
Clear Right Rear +
BK Ground (common)
RE Power switch signal (+12 when head unit is on, turns on amp)

As I said in post #3 it's a lot easier to just use a 1.5v battery to figure out speaker connections than try to make a temp. conn. to the head unit.

Texas911 found the critical info though. I knew I'd seen it before just couldn't find it.

Using a battery on a speaker is one thing, but on a line level input it might result in a really big thump.
