Engine tray and high speed stability.
HTML Code:
Engine tray installed, 166mph, car was very stable but ran out of go fast, I wanted a TT at that moment Engine tray removed, 153mph, car was beginning to get a bit light in the rear and becoming a bit twitchy, I backed off and cruised home
This quote is from another thread, and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this effect from removing the engine tray.
Mine came off when I bought the car in 2001.

seriously with my tray on, taking long turns on the autobahn at 150mph, I feel the car is bolted on the road from the back, and supple from the front. (supple not unstable)
Without the tray, the car feels supple from rear and front.
then again, its only a personnal feeling,
and suspension is calibrated at the stealer, I don't know what camber/caster/toe I have.
I haven't check difference in speed

as i recall from the last time this came up the conclusions were that at street speeds the tray was not at all necessary and should be removed, but that for track speeds the tray did provide important aerodynamic properties.

except at the track you WANT that cooling even MORE IMHO..
I never noticed a problem at DEs.. maybe people actually racing and doing enduro type stuff would but for 20 minute DE sessions, I noticed no instability.. fastest I've seen at a track (when I dare to look) is 131mph so I'm not going all that fast anyway FWIW

So who is gonna step up here and build an engine undertray that is speed activated. In the normal/cool configuration it would have slats open that are perpindicular to the drive line. When the car hits - lets say 120mph - a small motor would close the slats into an aerodynamic mode. This could either be venetian blind style or simple overlapping panels. We'd need a manual override switch of course so we can close it at low speeds so if we are ever driving in let's say... Germany or Switzerland, no one can complain about our noisy engines. Of course, the same switch could close off the bypass pipe on the LPMM mufflers. Hmmm... a stealth mode for 993's?

That was my quote and was not meant to be a gauge of all 993's at speed. It is mearly my experience in my car with the tray on & off while hauling *** in a straight line.
I can honestly say that with the tray off at 150+ it feels like the car is becoming rear end nervous and I really wouldn't want to try a big sweeper turn in that configuration due to distinct possibility I might have to look in the rearview mirror to see where I'm going and what I'm about to hit.
Now when I get my new suspension installed and the car lowered to the RS ride height I will do it again to see how it feels.

ZP44, it is an interesting observation none the less.
For anyone planning a top speed run it may be wortthwhile to bolt it on and then remove it.
