Nice right up on the cars. And congrats on the new addition!
One month in a twinkie factory can't hurt this...........

Mark in Baltimore: great post. Enjoyed the insight. It's allways curious to me how so many of us here when we drive the next new Porsche feel like it's getting away from the grassroots of the 911-- the whole too big, too luxurious, too much, thing. Is it possible that we all really don't find that "bigger, more, is better" when it comes to the 911? Could a simpler car (cables instead of wires, heaven forbid roll up windows, etc.) might actually suit us better than all this.

Maybe it really is possible to "go back" to building 911s with an old school approach. It seems more than a few here seem to miss it. I know I do. Don't get me wrong, technology is a wonderful thing, but when is it too much of a good thing. Imagine how impressive the 997 would be without hundreds of extra pounds of comfort features and needless electronics. Simplify and progress can go hand in hand. Just my .02

I have read a few posts like this and hope that I am not making a mistake with the 997 purchase. I just got back from a short drive and was imagining what the GT3 will be like and how it will compare in the handling department. My car is setup so perfect but it just needs a bit more power and I can’t find a reasonable solution to that problem without spending a great deal of money, so that takes me back to the new 997 (I don’t want the power delivery of a turbo). Only time will tell.

901aero: I'm all for simplicity but, realistically, I'm sure we're the minority. If Porsche hadn't updated the '98 993 (w/the lukewarm 996) then we would have all been reading about how "Past Due" the car had become for a MAJOR facelift. Again, I love the 993 cockpit, but would you pay current P-car prices for such an environment??? Hmmm...

THat's great to hear, Mark - reminds me a bit of when I had the 1986 911 cab for sporty days and the 928S4 (automatic) for 'regular' driving.
Fun to have both end of the Porsche spectrum.
BTW, got my 993 fixed and heading to NHIS for a couple of days.

John,
The 997 is beautiful, no question. Should you long for your 993, the Carrera Clock will certainly remind you of its simplicity (ships out tomorrow...).

Awesome, congrats Mark! Looking forward to seeing a few pics. I hope you don't get any crazy ideas about leaving the 993 behind.

Can I ask what spring rates you are running in your Motons? I'm thinking about doing motons this winter, and it would be a useful point of reference to know what rates you run. PM me if you're afraid of giving away your speed secrets.

FWIW,...I do have Clubsports for 997's sitting right here next to me. I could have them in your hands within 24 hrs and fix that "problem" right up,...
Whoa baby... nice reply!

Mark,

WOW! I had no idea you were even in the market! Congrats! ...but I am still jealous. But a hearty congrats, nevertheless!!! I know you have great love for your beautiful 993, as do I and most here. But think of it this way, you're a lucky man to have that gorgeous track car AND a comfy sports car of sports cars to ease you through the weekly grind, with the 3.8 no less. Enjoy it, my friend, in the best of health!

Hey, guys, thanks for all of the congratulations!! Pics will come soon, if work gives me a breather.

Eric, I run 700/900 lb springs on my Motons. I also have (and tried) 900/1200 lb springs but thought the set-up was way too brittle for some of the bumpy tracks like Summit. The car felt like it was skating over the bumps, an assessment that was confirmed by other racers. Maybe if all I drove was Watkins Glen, 900/1200 would be okay, but, in my duffer hands, 700/900 works just fine.

Everyone's set up seems to be different, depending on sway bar size and setting, canister pressure and split, compression and rebound setting and split, alignment, as well as driver preference. All I can say is that my car is simply amazingly fast and forgiving and helps to make a very average driver like me seem like I know what I'm doing out there. Steve Weiner was instrumental in helping me get to this point, BTW.
