Which car would you prefer?
I am getting back in and narrowing down on 993 to buy.
I currently have the following two options.
1995 with about 38K miles, nice suspension upgrades, clean, doesn't have full service records.
1996 with 66K miles, Clutch/Flywheel and Full Valve Job, nice suspension upgrade, full service records.
Thanks for your input.

No question, the 1996. As Bruce Anderson, among the most respected Porsche mechanics and freelance writers on the planet says, "always buy the newest 911 you can afford". The 96 has Varioram (12% more torque down low) and 1 year less time on all components, not to mention better resale value. The mileage on both is really of no consequence if you are going to own and drive the car for at least 2-3 years. A 993 with less than 100k miles is generally a very reliable ride and most that are well maintained can go 150k or further (much in some cases) without an overhaul.
The 1996 is your better buy.

Agree Bruce NAderson would usually recommend nesest one you can afford. I choose '95 because no OBDII - SAI problems. Pick up this months Excellence magazine - great article on buying a 993.

Actually, I wrote to Bruce Anderson to ask his recommendations. I was trying to narrow my search for a 911 to one of the following: 96-97 993 vs 93-94 964 vs 87-89 Carrera. I explained I wanted the car for a DD. I thought the 96-later 993 woul be more desirable because of the varioram and additional torque, etc. ..... Yes, he did recommend the newest, the 993. But he recommended a 95 993 because it does not have the secondary air pump and does not have the OBD2.
Maybe some of the 96-later 993 owners can comment on how serious this problem is.
Otherwise, no matter what car you buy, the most common peice of advise is to make sure you get a Pre Purchase Inspection done. Just because someone tells you a top end rebuild was done, unless you know the shop that did it, you are not going to know the quality of workmanship/parts that was put in. This is why you do the PPI no matter what. Good luck.
