Question Is 5.5" normal or too short? Extension possible?

I have this aftermarket leather and plastic shift ****/boot. It seems very low to me--really have to reach down to shift. Is this the same height as the original 993 shifter? Are there other ***** that sit higher?

I have a short shifter waiting to be installed. I was thinking that welding an extra 3/4" into the top section would improve the shift **** position and still leave enough slack in the boot.

Thanks for any info/advice.

I don't know if you're aware, but the short shift rod is longer up top than the stock rod. So just by installing it, your **** will sit something like 3/4" higher. I don't remember the exact amount but you'll know when you put the shift rods side by side. Hopefully your shift boot has enough material to still reach 6th gear comfortably.

Even on a C4, where the whole shifter is moved down?

The shifter is not moved down, the whole shifter assembly is longer, it extends 3/4" higher on top, and since the pivot point is also changed below, on a C4 it makes contact with the bottom unless the metal is expanded somewhat to make room for it.

Install the SS and your **** will be where you want it.

Installing the rs shifter on a c4 is different than a c2 since you can't move the tube that the shifter slides upon up, so the whole shift arm will sit lower (and you will need to relieve/dent the lower pan).

On my c2s, the RS shifter raised the **** a bit and I like it. It is about 6.25"

Seems like yours is stock.

so the whole shift arm will sit lower
See, that's what I thought. Anyone with a C4 and RS shifter be willing to measure?

Hummm, yes - there does seem to be an innuendo that C4 guys have a short stick ....

I installed a Wood **** (X2Board will like this one! LOL) and the OEM shifter can be adjusted for height. Just remove the cover and loosen the holding bolt, which will allow you a range of height adjustment.

I'm curious if the stock shift ****/boot with the rounded top sits higher, for a given shift lever height. I've seen pics where is does look higher, but it's easy to misjudge.

Hey, since you can't change the pivot point in the c4, you might want to take the old lever out, and then take the new (factory rs?) lever and compare the lengths of the two from the pivot points.

If you want it to be longer you could section in some new material or use part of the old one welded onto the new one to make the resulting shifter a bit longer. (Assumes you have access to a welder.)

It is just a hunk of steel. nothing too fancy.

Good luck.
Pete
