You know, all this waving and flashing lights started with us old 356 guys.
Now days if we see another 356 on the road we not only wave, we pull over and give each other a big hug!!
We were driving the 356 one day and pulled up next to a 928 at a stoplight. He had his window down and I said to him "nice car", he responded "you too, what kind of car is that?"

Being a newbie (since July), I have seen a variety of reactions in Maryland. I didn't know about the waving thing until a few P-car drivers had waved at me and I realized it was a cool tradition. Since then I have tried to wave whenever I wasn't busy shifting, negotiating a corner, etc., but (as noted by many others) I get few responses from the Boxsters and water-cooled folks. I guess I don't wave at Cayennes because there are a lot of them and I can rarely see the driver (e.g. at a stoplight).
One embarrassment is that I sometimes don't recognize non-993s as Porsches when they are approaching from the front... so sometimes my wave is late. I guess that means I am too 993-centric. Older p-cars just look more like Porsches to me at a distance.

As I started off with the true watercooler , yes - I wave at those - and all versions of Porsches - even when snubbed by the aircooled crowd before they to added water to their lives.: actually, it is more common here to flash the lights in acknowledgement when in rural or highway settings. Regardless, there are not many P-cars to be seen ( unlike some areas), so you don't want to miss one
As to the beginnings of this tradition .... when British sports cars ruled, and 356's were appearing, legions of MG, Triumph, Austin-Healy, and Jag drivers flashed and waved to all: if one didn't, they would be drummed out of the cadre - and forced to turn in their tweed cap and scarf. The point being that it was a collective recognition vs a brand loyality.

I used to wave at all........well except "peppers" cos most of those just did not ahve a clue...then I realized the number of waterpuimpers that actually "got it" and waved back were so few and far between it was not worth the effort.........I have now refined my wave or flash to anything the same age or older than my 993.......I seem to get a wave or flash back from most of those.........but I always respond to any p-car that waves or flashes me

Flash them instead of waving (yes, I started in 356s). Around here, where there are many two lane country roads, flashing lights usually means there is a radar trap ahead. When I flash other Porsches, they either "get it" and flash or wave back, or they slow down and start looking for cops. When I flash newer Porsches when in a 356, I usually get some very strange looks!

I wave at every Porsche no matter the year or model. I also agree that the newer models don't seem to care and don't wave back but I am not giving up the "Porsche wave", so I am going to keep on waving. (cue music)

Just trailered my car back from the shop yesterday on my open trailer and saw what looked like Boxster headlights in my left mirror. As the car came up, the driver and his wife looked over, smiled and gave me the thumbs up. I, naturally, smiled and waved back.

Until just last week. A 997 cab and a coupe (in the same week, no less) --one hit his lights, the other waved. It restored my faith in at least a few of the new car's owners.
