Question ECU 88-pin question

I've been looking into the circuit solution for the SAI CEL issue on my MY97 C2. In doing so, I decided to take a look at the wiring harness at the ECU. According to Adrain's book (p. 181) the MY97 993 ECU part is 993.618.604.10.

My driver's door label shows a build date of 7/96 and the ECU has two labels on it: One with Bosch # 0 261 204 008 and 993.618.602.00
Another with 993.618.604.00 and the VIN

So, does this mean that my (early?) MY97 car really has the first gen '96 OBDII ECU? I hadn't heard of this. I car has only been serviced at the dealer by PO, and I know of no ECU being swapped.

Aaron:

If your ECU's Bosch # is 0.261.204.008, then its the '96 2-chip one.

993.618.604.10

Flash versus OTP (PROM) code memory. Other than that, all 88 pin DMEs (Porsche) are the same.

Thanks for the info Steve. I had thought it should be a Flash based ECU since I have a '97 model. However, I also know the car went through the Exclusive program late '96 and shipped as '97, so just one of those model year transition quriks I guess.

Actually, "008" Bosch is the "00" Porsche and it's the 3 chip (VLSI ones) and a OTP type (1st 88 pin DME),
and the OLDER one ('96). Someone's changed your DME unit if it your vehicle is a '97!
The good news is that it has the OTP and no one can damage it via reprogramming,
i.e. no diagnostic communications usually.

I've seen a good number of early '97 cars using this same ('96) ECU and the factory shear bolts were in place. Further, the coding was original to the car,....

Porsche does strange things as a small manufacturer, especially close to the ends of MY's as they use up what parts left over during the production run.

I believe the ECU is original. The shear bolts were still in place and the second label on the ECU contains the 993.618.604.00 part number and the correct VIN number for the car. This label does not appear to ever have been tampered with. I double checked the VIN and it does indeed contain the 'V' year code for '97.
