Default Mystery noise solved:

After a few "spirited runs" to 120mph recently the car developed a light banging/tapping noise, but only above 50 mph or so.

Sounded like it was coming from the inside of the car, which was conceiveable as I like to drive with windows down (and sunroof open) at speed. But nothing looked out of place and the sound was there even with everything closed.

Was it the newly reversed windshield wipers?? No it was not. Hmm.

Only when washing the car did I notice the rear windscreen lower trim slightly loose and able to life somewhat and thus discover the culprit. Just pressed it back in place and I've been gtg since.

Guess I should I seal it back down with a sealant?

I was told it does not, but you may need something to glue into place if the plastic groove is cracked like mine.

120 mph with the sunroof open? Try that in your father's Oldsmobile.

What is the "Rear windscreen lower trip?" I have noticed an occasional light tapping/looseness sound in the drivers-side rear. It almost sounded like something loose in the wheelwell or between the body panel and the interior. It comes and goes, and I have been unable to find it. Thought your post may provide a clue.

Thanks-
G

Gbag,

I can tell you exactly what the noise is on your car. It's the rear wheel arch liners. The easist way to check is to put your hand up under the wheel arch and push upwards on the liner. You will be able to produce the tapping sound that you are hearing in the car.

I fixed mine by removing the liners and refitting them whilstt carefully tightening all the screws and bolts. Pay special attention to the screws where the two parts of the liner overlap. Difficult to explain but easy to see when you do it.

Good luck it is an infuriating sound.

Dropping into it now.... THANKS for the tip. Seems to be as you described. Not the best fitting parts on the car.

thanks again-

Hmmmm. Thats interesting. I have this really annoying rattle coming from the LHS (passengers side where I live) and I have taken the car to bits, including taking out the glove compartment but I couldn't find anything. I will check the liner today.
Has anyone had the drivers side door knock? Again, there's nothing loose. Had the door apart as well. Door is tight when I lift it up and down too. Checked under the car etc. Blimmin annoying but not the end of the world.
Be nice to solve it all the same.
Cheers

Check your driver's side door striker. Make sure the plastic insert behind the
closing post isn't cracked. If it is the door isn't held securely and it will rattle on the metal post. I experienced this in my `85, same basic latching design..
