Why a 993 C4 95 feels so much faster than a C2 96?

Folks,
The difference is too much... I keep a turquoise blue C2 Varioram 96 that is, as expected, a quicker car than the 89 C4...
What does not make sense is that the 95 (from September 94) non Varioram feels so much faster than the 96 C2 that I cannot understand. Ok the only mod I have on the 95 is a said performance chip I bought back in 95 from the old Automotion…
The 96 has 28.000 miles while the 95 has 6.000 miles… Can a performance chip make such a big difference making the car feel so much faster than a Varioram car?
Freddy

You should take a stopwatch and do some 30-100 runs or something like that, to determine if it's REALLY faster or if it's just perception. It could certainly go either way. I've driven (and owned) slow varioram cars. Let us know what you find!
p.s. no, your chip isn't going to make the '95 faster than the '96. If it's indeed faster, it's because the '96 has issues.

My mechanic mentioned several times that my 95 cab is strong and faster than newer 993s. I have no engine mod (unless RSR mufflers are considered engine mod) but it's black
. May be he meant it "feels" faster.

Tires can make a difference, both in tread design and size. Air temp can have a big effect. As Eric said, you really have to do a side by side test to know if your butt-meter is accurate.

Freddy,
I remember reading something on here about a rubber house associated with the Varioram mechanism that collapses with age. I think it's an easy item to take a look at and inspect. Hopefully someone with far greater P-car knowledge can chime in.
Andreas
P.S. Your 911 clock should be ready soon

The other possibility is, your '95 has a very strong engine from the factory, and the '96 got a very weak engine. Although, supposedly even the weakest engines had at least the quoted power (282 in the VR motor), so it shouldn't be that much of a difference. What kind of fuel was in the car, maybe someone threw some 87 or 89 in the '96

Yes Andreas you are correct, there is a ruber connector that connects the vacuum system to the varioram. Yes it crimps with heat and time and the vacuum no longer activates the varioram properly. The "rubber" connector is on the left of the engine. Stand facing engine, crouch so your head is level with the varioram, look left in towards the drivers side rear strut mounting and to do this you will be peering through a jumble of wires and hoses.......you are looking for the rubber connector about or just larger than the diameter of a Bic.....it will have hard plastic tubes entering from right and left and two (one slightly larger diameter than the other) coming from underneath. Have a look at it in situ and if it is kinked in the middle you almost certainly have a vacuum to varioram issue.......replacing is easy, cost is cheap (about $11 from memory). Somewhere in the archives there is a whole thread on this....2005 sometime but I cant find it.......there is also a sound associated with the varioram opening......you hear a sort of wooooooooaaaaaaammmmm as the varioram open on acceleration.....hope that helps

Some people like the torque curve of the 95's while others like the 96 and later cars' curve... it is really is a matter of taste. On the other hand, as some have suggested, there are occasionally really strong factory motors and occasionally ones that are a bit off.

Maybe it's like Honda drivers and their obsession with the feel of V-TEC? It's an illusion of performance when the V-TEC finally makes some power, since you had NO power anywhere else in the powerband.
When the '95 finally comes on cam, it pulls pretty well. In comparison to how it felt at 3000rpm, it's a rocketship at 5k!

Many thanks for the tips folks!! I think I have an issue with the Varioram as I do not hear the wooooooooaaaaaaammmmm that is typical from those engines... I am on a trip and far from the 96... as soon as I am back I will revert with my conclusion.
Cheers,
