I think the board should be free for anyone to use and leave it up to them if they want to join or not.

I do believe however, that if there were other areas (like the classifieds) that are only available to paid members such as DIY areas, advanced archive search functions, etc, then people would be more motivated to join on their own.

It's all about marketing and providing enough "free" access to have variety on the board but provide additional "value" to paid members.

thank you for being patient with the board.

BTW, has John D provided enough 'additional "value" to paid members' for you to join yet?.

free in this case is just freeloading. this site isn't free (bandwidth and servers are not free). it is only *free* for some because the rest of us are paying.

I'm always proud to see my Join Date read: May 2001. I signed up the day this place came live. There are quite a few people who signed up then. I did not pay, however, for quite some time. It took me a while to get a real realization of what I was gaining by hanging out here. Had I been given the ultimatum a month or so into this place's existence - I would have happily left and never came back. Even if I were to join today, I just am not sure I'd pay right away. This place is like Porsche ****. There is so much free information out there, why in the world am I going to pay for it? But, once you realize that there is no other rennlist out there that will satisfy you like this one... ok, enough of that comparison.

So the answer is......

NO - Non paying users should not be scolded into joining.
YES - Non paying users should be politely encouraged to join after their post count reaches 1000.
YES - Non paying users should be publicly scolded and chastised to join after their post count reaches 2000.
YES - Non paying users should be locked out when their post count reaches 3000.
NO - Non paying users should not be given the cold shoulder on advice because their tagline says "User" instead of "Member".
NO - Non paying users should not get discounts from rennlist sponsors.
NO - Non paying users should not get the right of rennlist group buys.
YES - Non paying users should get access to ALL DIY's.

And finally...

YES - People should be told in public to use a search... with an obligatory, commemorative "********" thrown in for extra measure.

Brian

the reason for all the May 2001 registrations.

John D changed software then. You had to re-register in May of 2001 or whenever you next posted.

at your guidelines.

(I figure 500 is the threshold, not 1000.)

I remember when things changed like that... didn't we have the actual user registration number listed prior to that. I wish I could remember my number.

Don't sponsors pay to advertise here? Like 99.9% of websites, the rates they pay are based on number of users and hits. Therefore non-members using this site (or any other) are not technically freeloading. It's the way most other free sites make money.

That said, I pay for public television and radio because I like it, and use it.
And I feel the same way about this place. It's an honor thing I suppose (and you know how much of that is floating around these days )

We need a poll to see how many members feel this way. This is not the reason to pimp membership "We pay so you should too"

It should be "We pay because we like what J&J are doing" and if you support them you should contribute.

The other reason is just selfish..

And if you know anything about bandwith and servers, it's not that expensive anymore. Take it from someone closely related to the biz...

Selfish? Not really. Assuming that selfish means pertaining to one's own welfare or benefit, I hardly see how asking a user to pay to help support the site for everyone constitutes personal interests. And, sorry, I don't recall anyone saying, "Hey, pay up because I'm paying!" Rather, the uttered mantra seems to be "Hey, dig some change from the seats of that $30,000 plus toy you just bought and help support the site that has helped save you money and offered you guidance!"

I believe it still costs more than ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

I really don't care to have those who can't see the light as fellow members, so I support their lack of support. I also support their lack of access to most everything.

That's exactly what Matt Davies wrote and what I quoted. I support people paying to benefit J&J but not pay cause we are all paying for you.

I think you are way off base on this comment….

Actually I do know a lot about servers and bandwidth and can say, the uptime of r’list is a testament to the dollars John is spending.

Not to mentioned the anti-whatever keeping hackers out from turning r’list into game distribution servers and relay servers. I am always amazed at how many posts occur within the time it takes me to refresh my browser!!!

R’list, from my observation does not have a ton of users, but it seems all the users are on the site almost at the same time 20 hours a day and the response time is most always great.

This speaks volumes of the multiple servers running to service those requests not to mention the multiple T(X) lines to service them.

How can I be off base much less "way off base" when we never quantified "expensive".
