This may cause an increase in odometer gear replacement DIYs.......

I remember the old days of just checking the oil with a straightforward glimpse of the diptick. 100 threads later and we are all still thoroughly confused. Maybe we should just consult a psychic instead of reading tea leaves on the fluted spiral of the stick, let alone trying to reference the random number generator oil level guage. No wonder they deleted the stick on the 997. Goodness gracious.

So if your in the middle of the dip stick spiral, does that mean the oil is half empty or half full?

One last question, is **** retentive hyphenated?

Read the manual, I was confused too, asked a Porsche Master mechanic and expert on 911 and he said use the dials, not the dipstick and that is not the first time he told me that, but I too didn't want to believe in the dials...so I re-read the manual and followed the instructions correctly, car must be on level ground, proper temp for engine, temp gauge at 9:00 , etc...dials worked like a charm when I followed the manual, the manual uses the dipstick approach second, first choice is the dials.

and he said use the dials
If I could see the gauge working, it would inspire confidence. I suppose I could keep adding oil, but I'm dead center on the dipstick. Is it worth overfilling to see a needle move?

How many points of failure for the gauge? Sender, wiring, gauge itself, others? How many for the dipstick? If I could see the gauge working, it would inspire confidence. I suppose I could keep adding oil, but I'm dead center on the dipstick. Is it worth overfilling to see a needle move?
Could be your inability to understand and follow the manual correctly? A user error?
why would you follow an expert's advice and the manufacturer's advice over something you read on the internet? Doesn't make sense to me...

Hawk,
Your advise is contrary to everyones here, although I respect the advise from that mechanic.
It's just concerning because my guage typically stays in the Red and my dipstick is near the 1/2 point. My guage occassionaly comes up to the mid point despite the dipstick. The dipstick seems the only measure that has a consistent reading. Often wondered if my "sender" or other is faulty, that's why I stuck to the dipstick.
