I was doing a cap and rotor change this weekend and by accident forgot to hook the hall sensor back up on the distributor, the problem was i noticed no difference when i plugged it back in. I was under the understanding that with the hall sensor disconnected it would retard the timing 6 degrees is this correct? and is there anyway to test to see if the hall sensor is working correctly in the dist?
1. Just unplug the Hall sensor while at about 1500 to 2000 RPMs and
you should see the RPMs drop if the timing is retarded the expected 6 degrees, or
2. Use a timing light and determine the timing with and without the Hall sensor
connected.
The actual affect is that instead of individual retarding of each cylinder
in 3 degree increments, all cylinders are retarded 6 degrees but only when
a knock condition occurs and there's no Hall signal. Also, the sequential
fuel injection reverts to BFI (bank fuel injection).
