Why that sentiment, love that car.
Car felt underpowered compared to the Euro spec car. But mostly lacking the directness and steering feel/feedback compares to E30 M3. Build quality was also down with lots of issues with fit & finish for a car in that price range at the time. Overall was a disappointment...maybe I was hoping for too much of a car for a replacement to the original (E30) M3.

soryy for hijacking the thread folks. Now back to your regular programing already in progress.

Default You'll like it.

The M5 and the 993 make for a great combination. I sold my 740 in March and bought a 2003 M5 to go with the Porsche. It's my daily driver and I'll even be swapping to snow tires in the winter. The power is definitely addictive. In a straight line, you don't run across many other cars that can keep up with the M5. However, I still like the Porsche on the twisties.

I have an e34 M5 [1991] which I love. I miss my 993, and basically if you talk to a lot of the Bimmer folks, the e34 [1991-1995] and the e39 [1995-2003] are like the 993 to 996. Drive both, but I love the feel of the e34 car. It is the last of the handbuilt M cars, a lot of character, has a derivation of the M1 lump in the front, and looks neo-classic IMO.

I second www.m5board.com for a resource to the M5s. My M5 is the best all-around car I have ever owned thus far, and it is the first car I have had that I can say I probably won't sell for a very, very long time.

Mine's not a M5...but it is a '95 E34 (525i) 5-speed. I simply can't say enough good things about that car. Even with 215,000 miles, I would very likely get rid of the 993 before I would get rid of my E34...and THAT's saying something, cause I LOVE my 993! I'll never get rid of my E34...I'll just "restore" it as needed to keep it in good shape.

Nice to hear about the 215K Allen, I've always been a fan of BMWs but have been hesitant to own one since my frame of reference in terms of dura/reliability has been Toyotas & Nissan (& 993 ) Well done!

I have both - an 03' Dinan M5 and modded 96' 993. My thoughts are pretty similar to what has been posted. I really enjoy the M car's straight line speed, comfort, safety, and understated appearance. But you can't beat the P car's handling and character. It is a great combo in my opinion and I consider myself very fortunate.

I've seen mid-mileaged 00' M5's in the high 20's. That's a steal with a good PPI. I've had no SAI or other issues (only a misfire one day for about 2 minutes then dissappeared). I'm about to run out of factory warranty though and considering an extended just because I'd like to keep it.

Can't go wrong with a good one.

Nice car and nice moustache!

The car looks almost as big as a 7-series. Any more pics? The car that is.

I sold my Porsche and my '01 540 to buy an '06 M5. I've been loving every minute of it.

I wasn't sure if you were referring to an E39 M5 or an E60 M5.

Arrwin--I will get some loaded on here soon--those are the only pics that I have digital right now since my normal camera is a 35MM Canon...I love the look of the e34 M5 though--very classic
