Default First experience with Mobil1 5W-50 Supersyn

Since the 15W50 got pulled from the Mid-East market around 2004, only 0W-40 Supersyn has been available. I always felt the car did not idle smoothly with 0W-40 noticably during summer (constant 100+F, more like 110-120, so no surprise perhaps..). Since Mobil refuses to supply their new 5W-50 supersyn "Rally Formula" as its called (Mobil reply: "imported to Mid-East only for the SLR McLaren's") I imported some myself from Norway which now has been in the car for a month. And what a change it is, it definetely sounds and feels better at idle - it's not as rough as before. And without being able to measure it, it seems to run marginally cooler at high speeds too. So far so good. And with the lower weight at cold temperatures it should be a better option than the 15W50...

Thanks for the report! I wonder if anyone has found 5w50 in the US?

Default Oil of choice on the SLR

Since it is the oil for the SLR and the SLR is here, I guess you could at least get it at a Mercedes dealership. But if its there it should be available at other retailers.
I currently run Mobil 1 0W40, but I do notice a rough iddle. Maybe this would help??

I too run Mobil 1 0W40 with no problems whatsoever.

The only thing I could think of where oil could cause a rougher idle is that perhaps you have an ailing lifter(s) which was/is bleeding down faster with the lighter 0W40 versus the heavier 5W50. That's pure speculation though.

I might be the only person that finds this ironic - importing oil from Norway to Oman

Statistically speaking, Norway is the world's 3rd largest oil producer (some 3 to 3,5 mill/bbl/day) as compared to Oman's .6m/b/d ... so with a factor of 7 I can justify importing it Nonetheless the airport custom officers did get a bit suspicious when they found I had 16 liters engine-oil (and not moonshine nor beer) with me

I just bought 18 qts of 15w-50 from Kragen for $3.99 per as a result of using a coupon from their 2005 calendar. I bought them in two chunks. In each instance the clerk at the register wondered aloud - "is this $3.99 for all of these bottles"?
