Default 993 Windshield Issues

I submit the following information for your information ONLY. I don't expect this thread to become a big debate about the truthfulness of what I was told (and what I am passing on to you) or the correctness of what the people here told me. Use it or ignore it as desired. YMMV!

I just picked my car up from having an new windshield installed at the factory in Zuffenhausen/Stuttgart. Instead of a simple replacement, it turned into a somewhat major project. The biggest single problem was that I had used Pedro's Ice Wax to try to stop the notorious squeeking. The bad news is that this stuff has silicon in it, and anyone who has done body work knows, silicon is absolute murder on any paint or adhesive work...meaning it makes it nearly impossible to have the paints or adhesives set up properly. They tried several cleaners/strippers, but could not get the stuff off well enough that they felt confident that the adhesive would set up and stick properly. The only fix was to strip the windshield frame down to bare metal and re-primer and repaint it. (The advantage is that they took care of some slight rust at the same time.) This cost me an extra $1200 over the simple windshield replacement.

The car had had similar work, including a repaint of the entire roof, under PCNA's 10-year rust guarantee, but the work was done improperly and poorly. The factory guys wanted to know which Dealer did the work, and were going to make a claim against them, but they can't touch U.S. Dealers, nor can they mess with PCNA. Apparently, they CAN hit up the German Dealers if they find work not done properly..... Anyway, they showed me several spots on the roof where the car was not prepped properly, and silicon prevented the paint from curing properly. They said it is no issue now, but when I have the car repainted someday, those areas (at least) "should" be stripped completely. They had also not even gotten the glass in the proper place, as evidenced by the VIN number being partly obscured and me being able to see light from the inside of the car at the top corners of the glass.

So, bottom line....use Pedro's (or any other silicone based product) with the awareness that it will "f" up any future paint work or windshield replacement you might want to do in the future. And if the windshield replacement people tell you "it is no problem," don't believe them...it IS a problem. Perhaps no big issue in the U.S. with lower speeds, but since I occaisionally run down the Autobahn at 150mph or so, I want that damn windshield in there right....and it is...NOW!

Cool Hmmmm, opposite experience for me....

There is a Porsche factory windshield squeek fix kit which includes some "special" string and some goop. It's buried inside a moving van now...but I'll check it out to see what is in the goop when the box arrives. I bought it from Schatz Motorsports in Thousand Oaks, CA, an incredible source for Euro Porsche parts by the way.

I have been using a product similar to Pedro's, and I have had winshield replacements over the block of time I have been using the product...there were no problems installing the windshields.

You are so right about silicone and paint...its presence causes "fisheyes" in the new paint.
