Default Lousy gas

I used to have this problem with my old BMW bike (R60/7). Occasionally the summer blends of gas must lack a bit in the octane dept. as I get a touch of pinging at low revs when pulling away from a stop. I always use Chevron premium. I put in 5 gallons of 100 unleaded race gas to fill it up and after it had time to mix probelm solved.

This is a problem with any air-cooled, hemisperical head engine with offset plugs and is also a testimony about the sad state of pump gasolines sold in the USA, now.

As these engines accumulate mileage, carbon buildups increase the effective CR enough that some engines can detonate in hot weather with premium gas.
