Is the CL500 faster than my 96 993?

Its funny that you guys call the 993's "slow".....when I got in mine and let it rip the first time that is not what I was thinking. I actually thought it was quick. I still do, just not as much as before. Its plenty fast enough to get me into trouble and the fact that you can lay that piddlie amount (282bhp)power down going through turns is what makes these cars tons of fun. Even more so with PSS9's I am assuming? So whats the HP and 0-60 or 0-100 time differences in a TT vs. a normally aspirated 993 anyway?

If you think that makes your 993 feel slow, jump in a real race car like a Barber Pro, Indy Light or even Star Mazda Series cars and you'll think you're driving a pig when you get back in your 993.
That was when I realized that 911's are great sports cars but unfortunately they cannot hold a candle to a dedicated open wheel race car.

Fastest sports cars I owned before the 993 were an '86 RX-7 that did 0-60 in about 7 sec, '96 Mitsubishi AWD turbo eclipse also around 7 sec 0-60, and a 1980 928 0-60 @ 7 sec. Getting into my 993 felt like a rocket in comparison to any of those cars at 0-60 in about 5.2 or so. My buddy has an '03 M3 that has all the Dinan goodies and that car is fast. Probably does a little over 4 sec 0-60 times but I guess its not all about having the fastest 0-60. The GT3 I drove a few weeks ago also was fast and would probably chew up and spit out the M3 on a track. Neither of those cars felt the same as the 993. I didn't get out of either car wishing I had one instead of my 993 which says alot given that both cars are worth more $$$ than mine. Higher value + Higher speed does not = Higher enjoyment factor...

Feel assured that the CL500 is slower than an 993 c2 - at least in the real world on the autobahn (it is hard to distinguish a badge-delete-CL while driving but I wouldn't believe it was a CL600 and definitely not a supercharged CL600).
It might be interesting to compare with the new CL550 though...

I love mine but it has definitely made my BMW 323 coupe feel slower every time I drive it. I now keep it in gear longer to get more acceleration to combat the lazy feeling. 140,000 miles in the Bimmer and I never thought it was quick but now it feels disappointing. The 993 at speed is plenty swift. From a standstill, it struggles to keep up with many of today's cars (until 4K in 2nd when it makes up for lost time).

On the freeway I think that from 60 or 80 up to higher speeds the 993 seems right up there compared to most of the fast cars, though those MBZ things really go, and with so many new cars with lots of hp we are not alone. One thing that does distingush is very high MPH, the Porsche is designed to handle up to top speeds, while the sedans are MPH limited, because they become unstable at higher speeds. With normal driving this is of course moot, but can give the Porsche owner some consolidation. Up on the winding turns only some real sportcars ever even come close to a sorted out 993.

tailgated a CL500 thru an entry ramp bend onto Garden State Parkway, was in second gear RPM ard 4. The CL500 punched it at the end the bend and so did I,... could not catch it... (the merc def burned some oil while doing so as I saw lots of smoke coming out of his pipes and along with the burnt oil smell)...
I agree that I love my 993 for every reson except for the brute power...

I get a constant reminder how quick my 993 is and how nimble it is with the PSS9's every weekend when I get the oportunity to drive my wifes 03 Honda Accord!!! hehehehe I love to slide back behind the wheel of my baby!!! Ok she may not be as fast as an M3/M5...6 or some mercs and maybe not even as fast as some american muscle cars in a staright line, those guys all like their cars too....but then thats not why I drive a Porsha!!! To me, having driven p-cars since the mid-80s.....its a feeling I simply do not get when driving another car....dont get me wrong, I love to drive other cars when I get the chance....but nothing else makes me smile the same way as when I look at my 993 and then get in and go for a drive along a windy road and just feel the speed and poise through bends that most other cars cannot even think of approaching at the same speeds.....I am in love and look through rose tinted glasses.......dam true.........
