Do you think I am doing any harm running on semi-synthetic?
Do you know what version of Magnatec was used? There is a Castrol oil on the approved list which may be Magnatec under another name, for use by the trade

Prolong 10w40 for me on a 183,000 mile engine that's never been re-built. Mobil 1 in the lower grades is too searching and the car runs quieter, at a lower temperature and uses less oil than it did on Mobil 1. But then, oil is an argument that everyone has an opinion on......

Tracked down and spoke to the Mechanic who did the oil change. He claims he always put 10W-30 in 993's, always has. Turns out it was Mobil ! and not Castrol Syntec. His shop specializes in Porsche, Audi, Mercedes & Jags. When I asked him why he would not use a Porsche approved rating/measurement (?) he responded that it was a good all year formulation.
Hmm. Huh?

Sounds to me he only wants to keep one oil in stock thinking one blend is universal for all cars he services. I rather put oil in that Porsche recommends. Hopefully he is using Porsche or Mahle filters.

Spoke with MArk at Formula MotorSports (NYC) yesterday and explained the story to him. He told me to just wait 'til my next scheduled oil change and just leave it for now. His view was it didn't really matter all that much as motor oils have gotten so much better over the years. So now I have 2 Porsche shops saying 10W-30 is fine for a 993. So, what's all the fuss about with oil weights?

Was too lazy to do it myself.

To me, 10x30 it is a little too light on the weight for track use or even for summer use. I would plan on changing to the Castrol Syntec 5-50 or to the Mobil1 0-40 before either of those things get further going this year. Many on this board in hot climates/summer/track, use 15x50 Mobil 1.
